The director of It Follows has completed his next production and it stars two leading actors from the Spider-Man films. David Robert Mitchell's Under the Silver Lake is a noir crime thriller that headlines Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3). The film has just been given a release date which could also make it a contender to appear at the Cannes Film Festival this year, in the same way that his previous movie did.
Mitchell wrote and directed It Follows, which debuted in 2015 and won over a lot of critics and fans in the horror community. Starring Maika Monroe (Independence Day: Resurgence) it told the disturbing story of an unexplained entity that relentlessly pursued the victims of a curse which was passed on by sexual contact. Full of allegories about morality, sexuality and karma, It Follows nonetheless stood apart from most horror films due to the sheer creepiness of the concept and the dreamlike imagery. While it is generally listed as being one of the best horror films from that year, it also succeeds in being extremely polarizing for some. Nonetheless it was a bonafide indie hit and raised Mitchell's profile, making him a director to watch for future projects.
Now, Bloody Disgusting reports that Under the Silver Lake is due to hit New York and Los Angeles theaters on June 22, and will then be rolled out to a nationwide release. Garfield plays Sam, a character who (in the words of the official synopsis) 'becomes obsessed with the strange circumstances of a billionaire mogul’s murder and the kidnapping of a girl'. Grace plays Sam's friend, who helps him with the investigation regarding the girl.
The cast also includes Riley Keough (The Girlfriend Experience) as Sarah, Sam's new neighbor, and Riki Lindhome (The Big Bang Theory). Like his previous movie, Mitchell also wrote the screenplay. American composer Disasterpeace, who provided the dreamy score for It Follows, will be performing the same duties for this film as well. The distribution is being handled by A24 (who made the announcement) and they could well put Under the Silver Lake up for competition at Cannes.
Although there's little to go on with the sparse plot details so far, things look pretty promising. The plot faintly echos Chinatown, and Garfield should be a strong lead. Although it reads like a simple hard-boiled detective thriller, it's highly unlikely to play out just like that, with Mitchell presumably bringing some of the imagination and style he displayed in his previous film to the mix. We'll bring you more updates about this intriguing movie as we get them.
