David Oyelowo plays a hapless corporate stooge kidnapped by angry cartel members in the new trailer for Gringo from Amazon Studios. Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton, Sharlto Copley, Amanda Seyfried and Thandie Newton also star.

"Madcap" doesn't begin to describe the plot of Gringo (not to be confused with Mel Gibson's Get the Gringo). David Oyelowo plays Harold, a businessman in dire financial straits, who heads to Mexico on a business trip/vacation. But Harold doesn't know his shady drug company bosses (Theron and Edgerton) have been making side-deals with the cartel. When an angry cartel kingpin nabs Harold, his company sends in a grizzled mercenary (Copley) to get him back.

Amazon Studios has dropped a wacky trailer highlighting Gringo's high-concept shenanigans. Nash Edgerton (Mr. Inbetween) directed the action-comedy from a script by Anthony Tambakis (Jane Got a Gun) and Matthew Stone (Intolerable Cruelty). See the video above.

David Oyelowo and Charlize Theron in Gringo.

David Oyelowo has built a solid reputation as a dramatic actor though performances in heavy stuff like Selma and A Most Violent Year. Here, he gets to cut loose a little bit, playing a regular guy thrust into a completely insane situation. Charlize Theron and Joel Edgerton also get to pour it on as Oyelowo's scheming superiors. Amanda Seyfried and Harry Treadaway pop up as young drug mules who try to help our hero out. Sharlto Copley plays the mercenary who may or may not have a grip on the situation. With his gnarly beard, Copley for a second looks like Matthew McConaughey (who apparently was not available). Theron looks in full ice-queen mode as Oyelowo's tough-as-nails boss. Thandie Newton also appears as Oyelowo's unfaithful wife (if you blink you'll miss her in the trailer). Somewhere in the middle of the madness, Paris Jackson makes her long awaited film debut.

Gringo kicks off Amazon's busy feature film slate for 2018. Later in the year, Amazon drops Joaquin Phoenix's brutal hit-man drama You Were Never Really Here. The studio's slate also includes the Eddie Redmayne/Felicity Jones reunion The Aeronauts. Terry Gilliam's totally unkillable The Man Who Killed Don Quixote also will arrive thanks to Amazon some time in 2018. Amazon currently has Woody Allen's Wonder Wheel and Richard Linklater's Last Flag Flying in theaters.
