David Harbour has been cast in the Christmas-themed thriller Violent Night. The actor, 46, has become an unlikely action lead in recent years following his role as Sheriff Hopper on the Netflix drama Stranger Things. Harbour’s latest turns as the Marvel character Red Guardian in Black Widow and a violent mercenary opposite Chris Hemsworth in Extraction have proved his surprising knack for action choreography.

Now, Collider reports that Harbour will star in a new Holiday thriller called Violent Night next year. Slated for release in December 2022, the Universal Pictures film is set to put a violent twist on the Christmas season, though no plot details are yet known. Norwegian action-horror director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) is directing the project, while the screenplay is being penned by Sonic The Hedgehog team Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Coming from 87North, the production company run by John Wick’s David Leitch, audiences can likely expect thrills, heavy action and perhaps a slightly dark-comedy tone.

While nothing of Harbour’s exact role in the film is known yet, fans of the actor will certainly see plenty of him next year. In 2022, Harbour will return as Hopper in Stranger Things season 4 on Netflix, and he is also set to star alongside Anthony Mackie in upcoming ghost-adventure We Have A Ghost, directed by Happy Death Day’s Christopher Landon. Harbour’s prowess as an action lead continues, and he also recently hinted at a return to the MCU for his Russian super-soldier Red Guardian. Perhaps Violent Night will give audiences a taste of what a solo Marvel outing could look like with Harbour in the lead.
