Netflix takes to social media to tease a mysterious new project with David Fincher. Fincher has already teamed up with Netflix to produce and direct highly acclaimed projects, including House of Cards and the breakout series, Mindhunter. While the prolific director waits for the lengthy "purgatory" between the second and third season of Mindhunter, he began work on another Netflix project, titled Mank, which would go on to win two of the ten Academy Awards it was nominated for back in April of this year. Since Fincher signed a four-year deal with Netflix, it was only a matter of time before another project came about.

Fincher is best known for his psychological thrillers, many of which have gone on to win numerous awards and nominations. In total, the director's films have earned 40 nominations at the Academy Awards, including three categories for Best Director. Fincher's best known films include 1995's Seven, 1999's Fight Club, and 2010's The Social Network. Before his feature film debut with 1992's Alien 3, Fincher produced and directed a plethora of noteworthy music videos, including Aerosmith's "Janie's Got a Gun" and Madonna's "Express Yourself." Now, it seems Fincher is once again returning to the small screen.

One of the leading theories as to what the new Fincher project could be is Mindhunter season 3. While fans of the series would love that announcement, it seems unlikely considering the post is from the streaming service's film account. Since that account covers news about Netflix original movies, it seems more likely they are hinting at a new film from the Seven director. Many feel the frontrunner to Netflix's big announcement is Fincher's The Killer project, which currently has Seven writer, Andrew Kevin Walker, attached to pen the screenplay. The story is said to be adapted from Alexis Nolent and Luc Jacamon's graphic novel that centers on an assassin with no name. Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton are reportedly set to star in the movie.

While Netflix's announcement about Fincher's new project is more than likely about a new movie, fans of Mindhunter should not give up hope about a third season. Both Fincher and Netflix were reportedly in talks about Mindhunter season 3 earlier this year. One thing is for sure, though, whatever Netflix and Fincher announce is sure to be a hit, considering the director's stellar track record.
