David Ayer has confirmed that Gotham City Sirens is still in development as part of DC's upcoming slate of films. Though Suicide Squad was a critical flop, it did exceptionally well at the box office and spawned a legion of die-hard fans. It also made it clear that Harley Quinn was a big hit even outside of comics and TV, with rumors quickly amassing that Margot Robbie would get her own solo film. In fact, Harley Quinn could soon be the face of the DC Film universe, if every movie featuring her that's in the works gets made.

In addition to Gotham City Sirens and Suicide Squad 2, a Joker/Harley movie is currently in development, along with a Harley Quinn solo movie (according to Robbie). Gotham City Sirens has Ayers attached to direct and looks to feature Robbie as Harley alongside new big screen versions of Catwoman and Poison Ivy. There hasn't been much in the way of significant progress on the project to report over the past year - but it is still alive, in some form.

Collider spoke with Ayer about his Netflix film Bright and the conversation eventually turned to Gotham City Sirens. When the director was asked what the status of the film was, he replied with a terse "It's in development." Beyond that, Ayer refrained from providing any additional details about the project or its status.

DC's official film slate only features Suicide Squad 2 when it comes to the batch of proposed Harley Quinn movies, so it's no surprise many fans are wondering whether Gotham City Sirens will actually happen. Even if it does, Ayer's involvement has seemed tenuous ever since the director's last film with DC failed to impress critics and many fans. Bright has been savaged by critics as well, for what that's worth.

On the other hand, Netflix has reportedly ordered Bright 2 already and Ayer has earned acclaim for films like Fury and End of Watch, in the past. Even so, it's difficult to discern whether there is a future for Ayer in the DC movie universe and/or if Gotham City Sirens is even a priority for Warner Bros. and DC.

What is clear is that Harley Quinn is a big part of the WB and DC plan moving forward. Like Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and the Joker, Harley is one of the best-selling DC characters and she's only just begun to make an impact on the big screen. Gotham City Sirens may not be the next Harley Quinn film, but Clown Princess of Crime will return to theaters sooner than later.
