While Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda's decision to hide Luke Skywalker on Tatooine was successful, Darth Vader settles the Star Wars fan debate about whether it was actually a smart choice or not. Considering the the fact that the desert planet was the homeworld of Anakin Skywalker, some have wondered if Obi-Wan simply got lucky that Vader and the Empire never found the galaxy's new hope. However, the Dark Lord of the Sith definitively answered this question back in 2015.

As seen in Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca's Darth Vader comic series set shortly after the events of A New Hope and the Battle of Yavin, the Dark Lord became obsessed with his need to know the identity of the pilot who destroyed the Death Star. Hiring Boba Fett to uncover the truth, the bounty hunter soon found and fought Luke Skywalker. While Luke escaped, Fett still returned to Vader with the young Jedi-in-training's name, a major revelation for the Dark Lord that he had a son.

Soon after, Vader travels to Tatooine in Darth Vader #7 to visit the remains of the Lars homestead and Obi-Wan Kenobi's remote home where he had kept watch over Vader's son for years living as a hermit in the Jundland Wastes. However, some have wondered why Tatooine was the chosen world, a planet Vader knows very well. Additionally, no effort was made to change Luke's last name either. That being said, Vader confirms in this issue that Obi-Wan's decision was indeed smart, conceding that his old master must have known that Darth Vader would never return to the planet that had given him so much pain.

Darth Vader's Return To Tatooine After New Hope

Rather than being a dumb move and just getting lucky, choosing Tatooine was very strategic on the part of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Master Yoda. Just as the recent Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+ proved Kenobi's intimate understanding of Vader's psyche and tactics, Obi-Wan knew that Tatooine would be a persistent blind spot for his former apprentice who had done much to effectively "kill" Anakin, the man he once was before becoming Vader.

As a result, Darth Vader's concession that Obi-Wan was cunning in regard to Tatooine is a significant moment in the Dark Lord's journey. However, he's less than impressed that his son has next to no training in the Force (though much of that can be blamed on Luke's Uncle Owen). At any rate, Darth Vader proves that hiding Luke Skywalker on Tatooine was the best decision for him to be raised in secret and away from the eyes of the Empire and his father in the Star Wars galaxy.
