Warning! Spoilers for Darth Vader #12 ahead!

Darth Vader’s desire for vengeance against Han Solo and Luke Skywalker could be a major catalyst in a war that will involve bounty hunters, Jabba the Hutt and the Rebel Alliance. Ever since the destruction of the Death Star, Marvel's  Star Wars comics have seen Vader follow his own impulses and target his rage wherever he sees fit. This has led him to sabotage rivals and even go after the Emperor himself. And now it could help launch the War of the Bounty Hunters.

The upcoming War of the Bounty Hunters is a months-long event across all the Star Wars titles published by Marvel Comics. The event centers around multiple parties trying to intercept Boba Fett before he can deliver Han Solo’s frozen carbonite body to Jabba the Hutt. Preludes to the event have already begun and have seen Boba Fett lose possession of Han’s body. As the notorious bounty hunter seeks to regain his prize, Luke is also on the trail of his old friend, and future issues promise the involvement of rogue archeologist Doctor Aphra, bounty hunters like Beilert Valance and Bossk, and of course, Vader himself.

In Darth Vader #12 by Greg Pak, Guiu Vilanova, Dean White, Giada Marchisio, and Joe Caramagna, the Dark Lord of the Sith is undergoing repairs following battles on the Emperor’s hidden planet of Exegol. During the procedure he flashes back to the destruction of the Death Star, when Han Solo swooped in with the Millennium Falcon and blasted Vader’s TIE Fighter off course, allowing Luke to fire the shot that destroyed the battle station. Readers learn that Vader’s torture of Han during The Empire Strikes Back was his way at getting back at the smuggler. When he recovers, Vader reflects that he no longer wants to turn Luke to the Dark Side, but instead believes that his son must die. And Han is the key to making that happen.

Darth Vader Luke Revenge

After he is completely repaired Vader declares that the Sith assassin Ochi of Bestoon is now under his command. He dispatches Ochi to a Hutt named Bokku, who insists that Jabba will recover Han’s body and maintain his power in the galaxy's criminal underworld. Ochi instead says that Bokku will be the one to recover Han and that he will deliver him to Ochi. Ochi makes no secret of the fact that he is working for Vader, and tells Bokku that he is now working for Vader as well, and that his power will increase as a result of carrying out this task.

Clearly Vader is not afraid of crossing one of the most powerful gangsters in the entire galaxy in order to satisfy his rage. He is ignoring the orders of the Emperor, who told Vader that he wants Luke and his friends alive. In addition, the fact that he will also help start a conflict that will envelope characters from across the Star Wars universe is of little concern to Vader. He wants his son dead, and is most likely hoping to use Han as bait to lure Luke into a trap. It already worked once in The Empire Strikes Back, but this time the kid gloves are off and Darth Vader has no desire to take Luke Skywalker or Han Solo alive.
