While the times Darth Vader used two lightsabers in the Star Wars galaxy were rare, his most intense Force vision reveals he probably should have dual-wielded from the start of his dark side path. In 2017's canonical Darth Vader series, the Dark Lord channeled his power as he'd never done before (or since). As such, his truest self and essence in the Force was revealed, confirming Vader's apparent belief that two blades are better than one.

Previously in Charles Soule's Darth Vader series, the Dark Lord of the Sith is introduced to readers the second he leaves the operating table seen in Revenge of the Sith. As such, the 25-issue series depicts his first steps as apprentice to Emperor Palpatine, culminating with the construction of his imposing fortress on the lava world of Mustafar built right next to the birthplace of Vader himself following his defeat at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, it was also revealed that Vader designed the fortress with the express purpose of amplifying his powers in a bid to bring his late wife Padmé back to the land of the living.

As seen in Darth Vader #25 from Charles Soule and Giuseppe Camuncoli, Vader experiences a powerful dark side vision. Having no need for his armor in this cosmic space, Vader's true form in the Force can be seen as a swirl of raging black and red (with empty space signifying his cybernetic limbs). While searching for Padmé, Vader encounters a manifestation of the Jedi Temple filled with Jedi Knights of the past. Igniting two jet-black lightsaber equivalents and destroying them all, it seems Darth Vader had a preference for dual-wielding, an act reminiscent of his duel with Count Dooku in Attack of the Clones when he was still Anakin Skywalker.

Darth Vader's True Form Is A Dual-Wielder In Star Wars

Vader vs Jedi Order in Darth Vader #25

While Vader primarily used a single lightsaber in the Star Wars canon, this issue proves he likely saw having two sabers as an expression of skill in the face of great numbers. It also supports Vader's powerful wrath and aggressive tactics. After all, two lightsabers are capable of twice the damage. However, a more recent story from Soule seen in this year's Star Wars #25 saw Palpatine training Vader in lightsaber combat as a Sith, confirming that the Emperor relied more on the dark side of Force rather than his blade, an ideal he impressed upon his new apprentice.

That being said, Vader still has a handful of moments where he indeed dual-wields lightsabers following this Force vision. Not only did he briefly dual-wield while facing the Third Sister in Obi-Wan Kenobi, he also used two lightsabers in 2018's Star Wars Annual #4. While Darth Vader only ever needed one lightsaber next to his power through the dark side, his intense Force vision confirms he had a preference for using two lightsabers in the Star Wars canon all the same.
