Set prior to the events of Episode I, Marvel’s comic miniseries follows Darth Maul in the early days of his apprenticeship to Darth Sidious, as he fights crime lords and chases down a Jedi Padawan to test his skills against her. Sowing the seeds of who the Sith Lord would become in The Phantom Menace, The Clone Wars and Rebels, Marvel’s miniseries forms an essential part of Darth Maul lore - and it’s all brought together across five issues in this slick volume.

It’s pretty well known that Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa was a major influence on the young George Lucas, in particular his film The Hidden Fortress. And you don’t have to look hard to find certain similarities between the Jedi/Sith and the samurai of imperial Japan - a fact that many artists have exploited, with some really cool results. Like in this striking figurine, which reimagines Darth Maul’s already-fearsome face as a terrifying samurai war mask and his lightsaber as twin scarlet halberds (and yes, they do combine into one double-bladed version).

As we’ve established, Darth Maul is one of the scariest figures to appear in the Star Wars films. In fact, so the story goes, George Lucas told his concept designer to “draw me your worst nightmare” when they were developing the character for The Phantom Menace. Consequently, when it’s Halloween at a Star Wars fan’s house, it’s basically a requirement that they have some Darth Maul swag on hand - such as this scary-yet-adorable figurine complete with a bowl for candy… or pens, or car keys, or whatever.
