Darren Aronofsky Working On New Comic Book That Has Movie Potential

It's a good time to be Darren Aronofsky. His Black Swan leading lady, Natalie Portman, snagged a Golden Globe for her performance (see the complete Golden Globes winners list); Aronofsky himself looks to at least receive an Oscar nod for his work on the psycho-horror-drama; he's also got The Wolverine (a.k.a. Wolverine 2) on the horizon as well.

Now there's word from Aronofsky himself that he's developing a comic book based on a script he describes as "hard to make", and given the nature of Aronofsky's previous work, that's an intriguing description to say the least.

Aronofsky was interviewed by Clothes on Film recently when he revealed his involvement in a new graphic novel project. The Requiem For A Dream director had the following to offer:

"[This comic book project] hasn't really been announced... But we're getting there. We're doing a comic book of a script that's really hard to make and we're going to do a comic version first and see what happens."

This won't be Aronofsky's first time dabbling in the pen and ink medium. When his original plans to make The Fountain as a big-budget production starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett fell through, Aronofsky teamed up with artist Kent Wiliam to realize his fantastical treatise on life and death as a comic book instead. When The Fountain was eventually resurrected as a smaller-scale project, William's sumptuous illustrations served as the template for the film's eye-dazzling visuals.

The Fountain Darren Aronofsky

It seems that Aronofsky's new comic book undertaking will be an original project that he is hoping could eventually come to fruition on the big screen, a la The Fountain. He's been linked over the past year to a number of projects, including The Tiger with Brad Pitt and Jackie, which his ex-fiancee and Fountain leading lady Rachel Weisz was at one point (and still may be) attached to star in as well.

Depending on the financial success of his Wolverine followup, Aronofsky could be given the chance to tackle another expensive project like his proposed Robocop reboot or possibly even a theatrical version of his in-progress comic book - whatever it ends up being.

Aronofsky's latest cinematic venture, Black Swan, is currently playing in theaters.
