In an effort to gain the incredible power of the Source Wall, Darkseid brought the Dark Phoenix back to life and tried to use her cosmic abilities to achieve his goal of ruling the cosmos. In the Marvel/DC Comics crossover The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans, the ruler of Apokolips attempted to use the Phoenix Force to rule reality, but it ultimately cost him his life.

In 1982, Marvel and DC Comics crossed over two of their most popular teams. The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans comic combined heroes of each universe as they faced off against Darkseid, who had the Dark Phoenix by his side. The crossover, by Chris Claremont, Walt Simonson, Terry Austin, Tom Orzechowski, and Glynis Wein, is widely considered one of the best crossovers between the two publishers ever. Unlike some other Marvel/DC team-ups, the single issue told a coherent story that was less about jamming as many characters as possible into a single story (although there were tons of cameos), and more about the X-Men and Teen Titans coming together to fight again an incredible villain.

In The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans, Darkseid successfully captured both the X-Men and Teen Titans and used the former's memories to tap into their emotions and utilize energy from the Source Wall to summon the Dark Phoenix. After taking over Jean Grey, the Dark Pheonix spars with the X-Men and sends a powerful Phoenix Bolt that Darkseid promises will destroy Earth. However, amidst the chaos, Charles Xavier and Raven strip the Dark Phoenix of her rage - and convince her to absorb the Phoenix Bolt she shot. The energy overcomes Jean and the Phoenix Force is transferred to Cyclops, who promptly unleashes a blast that defeats Darkseid.

Darkseid greatly underestimated the instability of the Phoenix Force and didn't account for the X-Men and Teen Titans being able to reach out to Jean and temporarily gain control. It allowed the heroes to save Earth and redirect her attack. Ultimately, Darkseid becomes a new face on the Source Wall.

Darkseid isn't the first villain to think he could control the Phoenix Force, but as many stories have previously told, even the biggest villains have had trouble dealing with its immense powers. He did come quite close to destroying Earth, however. But, in the end, while Darkseid nearly defeated heroes in both the Marvel and DC Comics universe in The Uncanny X-Men and The Teen Titans, he couldn't control the Phoenix Force, which led to his defeat.
