Warning! Spoilers ahead for Justice League: Last Ride #2

In the latest issue of DC's Justice League: Last Ride, Darkseid breaks his longstanding truce with the Green Lanterns. Set in an alternate timeline where the Justice League disbanded, a flashback in this new issue reveals that there's a reason the Lord of Apokolips and the Guardians of Oa never made moves against one another in the DC Universe...until now. As a part of Darkseid's major assault that tore the Justice League apart, it's revealed that a large part of his invasion force was sent to Oa, breaking their truce in favor of gaining power he'd never had before.

In Justice League: Last Ride #2 from Chip Zdarsky and Miguel Mendonça, the Justice League have reformed for one last mission: protecting the Main Man Lobo until his trial at the request of Hal Jordan, who's seeking to form a new Oa on Earth with its heroes being deputized as new Green Lanterns. However, a flashback to the past reveals why a new Oa and Corps are needed in the first place, and it's all thanks to Darkseid. While the majority of the Justice League was trying to handle Darkseid's massive invasion force on Earth along with devastating bombs being dropped at random points via his boom tubes, he also unleashed a simultaneous attack on Oa.

Seeing Oa in desperate need, Superman was prompted to leave Earth to assist Hal Jordan and the Guardians from being annihilated. However, even with Superman's help, Oa was still falling to Darkseid's parademons who were being teleported in via boom tubes as well. Clearly frustrated, Hal Jordan berates one of the Guardians in particular, angered by the truce with Darkseid they had maintained for hundreds of years only to be betrayed by him now that he has a use for their world and the Lanterns' Central Power Battery. While Batman was insistent that Darkseid cannot be allowed to claim the Green Lanterns' source of power as his own, it seems very likely that that's exactly what will happen in future issues, as the flashback ends with Darkseid arriving on Oa having just murdered the rest of the Guardians.

While it's unclear if the Guardians of Oa have the same arrangement with Apokolips in the primary DC timeline, it seems unlikely. This new Justice League story makes it pretty clear that it's a bad idea in the long run, and it seems like a poor call even before Darkseid's invasion of Oa. It was no doubt based on the Guardians' fear of being destroyed, which is obviously not ideal for those tasked with leading the Lanterns whose powers come from willpower and overcoming fear. At any rate, allowing Darkseid to do as he wished provided he left Oa alone has clearly backfired, now that he's decided to go after the Green Lanterns and kill the Guardians all the same.

In any case, it's going to be interesting to see more of this particular Justice League's past. Earth is still under siege, and the League has already made references to even more deaths and losses that motivated the team to disband, such as Martian Manhunter. Cleary, Darkseid's path of destruction is only going continue as this new Justice League story continues, and breaking the Green Lanterns' truce was only the beginning.
