Thanks to Tokyo figure-maker Emontoys, there are some new Dark Souls super-deformed (SD) figures that fans can add to their collections. The SD (also known as chibi) style presents characters in an exaggerated manner, with huge heads contrasted to small limbs and bodies. This style of figurine has been popular for a long time, with many Japanese and Western franchises' characters getting SD figures over the years. Chibi art usually takes intense or aggressive characters and makes them look more cute and harmless. With a grim franchise like Dark Souls, that's a tall order.

In the video game world, FromSoftware’s Dark Souls has become synonymous with unapologetically difficult and unforgiving, which is reflected in discussion about the developer's upcoming Elden Ring largely being focused on difficulty. Since the original game was released in 2011, simply comparing a game to Dark Souls usually qualifies its difficulty. The Darks Souls games have featured some of the most iconic and memorable boss fights in recent popular memory, and its bleak tone and ruined environments are far from cute.

Despite the intensity associated with the Dark Souls characters, Emontoys still managed to create six unique SD figures inspired by the series (via SoraNews24). The main protagonist, the Chosen Undead, also makes an appearance, sporting the armor from the official Dark Souls artwork, complete with a small sword stuck in a bonfire. Finally, there is also the bulbous, onion-like knight whose true identity is somewhat of a mystery. It is likely either Siegmeyer of Catarina, or his daughter Sieglinde. Solaire of Astora also strikes his iconic “praise the sun” pose in his figurine, and the maiden Fire Keeper from Dark Souls III remains stoic as ever.

Two of these figures are also iconic bosses from the original Dark Souls. Knight Artorias, Dark Souls' most tragic character, strikes a battle-ready pose with their sword slung over their shoulder. Dragon Slayer Ornstein, unlike their incredibly fast and aggressive fighting style, stands completely still, offering a unique chance to take the time to appreciate the design rather than mash the dodge button. Each of these figures stands a little over 4 inches tall and they are being sold all together as a set. Interestingly this is also called Volume 1, suggesting that there will be more volumes of super-deformed Dark Souls figurines in the future.

With such a dark and aggressive series like Dark Souls, it's fun to see some of the characters in a cuter light. While these SD figures might not be the most exaggerated in terms of cuteness, it’s still a significant change compared to their video game counterparts. The inclusions of Dark Souls' iconic onion knight of Catarina and Solaire of Astora striking his famous pose both do a great job to offset the graveness that the boss figurines still manage to convey.
