Here's everything we know about Dark season 4 and the show's future after season 3. This complex and dense time-traveling show explored the ramifications of time paradoxes in a unique way, involving multiple families in the German town of Winden. Family and relationships drama mixed with an epic battle between light and shadow make for an intriguing story with plenty of fans. But is this it for the series? Could the show continue into season 4, or were those Jonas’ final episodes?

Dark first released in 2017, and it became a sleeper hit for Netflix. Full of mysteries and plot twists, the German show grabbed viewers worldwide and was quickly renewed for a second season. Two years later, season 2 expanded the world of Winden, offering new timelines and an even more twisted family tree of characters. Dark season 2’s ending had another mind-blowing twist that promised another entire world of mysteries. The new season digs even deeper into the paradoxes Jonas is facing and expands into a parallel world.

Unfortunately for fans, Dark season 3 is the last season of the show. By the final episode, most of  show's central mysteries are all but answered. While it may be the last time Winden appears on the screen, the last season still offers eight hours of pure Dark storytelling with plenty of twists, brain-breaking time travel theories, and heartbreaking revelations. Not many shows can maintain the same level of quality and thematic synthesis as Dark, so while it’s sad to see the show go, it’s also great it was able to end on its own terms.

Back when season 3 was announced, series creator Baran bo Odar confirmed it would be the last season of the show. Although it has become a sort of tradition for Netflix to cancel shows after three seasons, this isn’t the case with Dark. In an Instagram post, Odar explained the plan was always to finish the story and end the never-ending cycle of time travel paradoxes. In this case, Netflix respected the creator’s vision and allowed him to make the conclusion he wanted. The result is another excellent season that delivers on its promises.

What Dark Season 4's Story Could Be

However, a show with so many twists and turns could easily find a way to continue past its final episode. Dark explored for three seasons what are time paradoxes and the consequences it has on the four families stuck in a time loop, but while one story might’ve been resolved, nothing is stopping Dark from making a new loop or parallel world. Perhaps in another dimension, in another timeline, the events of the last season didn’t happen or happened differently. Once a show opens the door for time travel existing, it allows for an infinite number of variations, alternate realities, and all sort of time-travel shenanigans. If the show’s creators have a good idea and a new angle to explore, why not go back to Winden or perhaps bring the same characters to a new universe? For now, however, this is the end of Dark.
