Dark takes place in a fictional small town in Germany called Winden, where a young boy recently went missing. When a second boy disappears, it triggers a series of events that unearth deep secrets for four local families, spanning multiple generations. The show mainly follows a teenager named Jonas Kahnwald, whose father recently died by suicide. In the aftermath of that life-changing event, he is thrown headfirst into the mystery behind the other boys' disappearances, unaware just how important he is to it all.

The show is created by Baran bo Odor and Jantje Friese, who are currently developing two more series with Netflix. The first is called 1899, about a migrant steamship filled with passengers heading west from London to New York. When they encounter another ship adrift, their trip quickly takes a horrific turn. The other is called Tyll, based on Daniel Kehlmann's novel of the same name. One of Netflix's earliest foreign-language shows, Dark was the first from Germany.
