Between her own feature film, Birds of Prey, and even a TV series on DC Universe, Harley Quinn has been in the spotlight a lot recently. But she's arguably never looked better than she does in the new upcoming Dark Nights: Death Metal. Since its announcement, fans have been itching to get a look at the new redesigns of some of their favorite characters -- and with artwork for Death Metal #2 now released, that sneak peak is finally here.

Back in 2017 fans were welcomed into the new Dark Multiverse through the series Dark Nights: Metal. The event was an instant hit, written by  Scott Snyder, with art from Greg Capullo, inker Jonathan Glapion, and colorist FCO Plascencia. In that pivotal story, Batman's investigation accidentally brought seven different Dark Multiverse Batmen into reality, giving an inside look at some twisted, darker versions of their favorite characters. This new summer series, Dark Nights: Death Metal, is set to serve as a sequel. And with the precedent of awesomeness already set with The Batman Who Laughs, expectations are high.

Harley is looking tougher than ever in her new design (whether it be a look created after the world falls in Death Metal, or born of the Dark Multiverse), with an absolutely stunning cover by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau. Featuring a new hairdo reminiscent of the colors of her original cap, rather than the more modern cotton candy blue and pink highlighted blonde, the cover depicts Harley menacingly smiling at the reader as she curls up with one of her two gigantic hyenas, although it is unclear if it is Bud or Lou. It seems they are tossing aside the fun, playful look that matches her more ditzy persona in favor of something far more fierce, fitting for a series titled Death Metal. But Harley isn't the only character who's had a sneak peak revealed.

As if he wasn't already death metal enough, Jerome Opena has provided a look at what to expect with Lobo. Of all the characters to get a metal treatment, Lobo may be the most obvious yet also least necessary, with his original design already appearing like he stepped out of an '80s metal band. Standing on a pile of skulls, it seems Lobo is redefining the idea of head-banging when it comes to Death Metal.

Don't worry, the heroes got some love too, specifically Aquaman. Nothing says Death Metal quite like metal spiked clothing, and that is definitely true for David Finch's cover here. Aquaman looks like he's ready to open up the pit, sporting a new jacket with a large collar and tall metal spikes on the shoulder guards. Outside of his new jacket, Aquaman seems pretty traditional, so while the spikes do lead one to believe it is his Dark Multiverse counterpart on display, there's always the slight chance that the Arthur fans know and love is simply dressing up for the occasion.

Lastly, readers are offered the standard cover for Death Metal #2, featuring characters that are most certainly NOT from the Dark Multiverse. In a cover by Greg Capullo, it appears that Batman and Wonder Woman have embraced the theme of death metal by riding in a monster truck edition of the Batmobile. Although Wonder Woman is missing her Golden Chainsaw of Truth, the nearly undead version of Swamp Thing and what seems to be a wave of zombified Batmen confirm Snyder and Capullo aren't holding back. What's to come next... is anyone's guess.

Dark Nights: Death Metal is a six-issue monthly series with the first three issues releasing in May, June, and July. After a brief break in August (for reasons not yet revealed) the final three issues will be delivered in September, October, and November. And as fans of Dark Nights: Metal already know, but DC is sure to promise, the coming event will bring with it a whole host of tie-ins and special issues to show how the DC Universe is transformed by this Death Metal nightmare.

Dark Nights: Death Metal #1 will arrive in your local comic book shop on May 13th, 2020.
