A new companion book goes behind-the-scenes of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance for an in-depth look at the making of the Netflix series. Age of Resistance is a prequel series to the 1982 film, The Dark Crystal, directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz. Both the movie and the series are productions of The Jim Henson Company and feature the incredible creations of Jim Henson's Creature Shop. This new companion book will detail the process by which Age of Resistance so faithfully reproduces the look and feel of the original Dark Crystal movie.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance begins its story many years before the events of the 1982 film. In it, three Gelfling uncover a terrible secret about their ruling lords, the Skeksis, using this horrible truth to rally the seven Gelfling clans and start a rebellion. Many of the characters and creatures in Age of Resistance were first introduced in The Dark Crystal, and they've been recreated with an impeccable attention to detail for the Netflix series. The series is also building on the lore and mythology Henson and Oz created when working on The Dark Crystal, all of which is detailed in the upcoming companion book.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance - Inside the Epic Return to Thra is a new book from Insight Editions that offers fans a behind-the-scenes at the series. It will detail the creative processes of producer Lisa Henson and director Louis Letterier, as well the work of character and costume designer Brian Froud. Inside the Epic Return to Thra will include exclusive cast and crew interviews, concept art, set photography, puppet designs, and more. Written by Daniel Wallace and with a foreword by Lisa Henson, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance - Inside the Epic Return to Thra releases November 5, 2019. Pre-orders are now available. Along with this behind-the-scenes companion book, Insight Editions is also re-releasing The World of The Dark Crystal. Originally released in 1982, The World of The Dark Crystal is a collaboration between Henson and Froud that features not just the concept art for the film but explanations for much of the mythology as well. This re-release is also including the bonus material that was included with the 30th anniversary edition, like a recreation of a booklet Froud and Henson showed The Dark Crystal's early financial backers in order to get them to sign on. The World of The Dark Crystal will be available in October 2019.
The Netflix series has not just impeccably recreated the world of Thra, it's greatly expanded on the lore that Henson and his team first imagined for The Dark Crystal. If Age of Resistance receives a season 2, there's clearly a lot left for the show to explore.
