Netflix releases a blooper reel for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Based on characters created by the late Jim Henson, the dark fantasy series functions as a prequel to the 1982 film, The Dark Crystal

After directing Sam and Friends during the ‘60s, along with Sesame Street in the ‘70s, Henson released his feature directorial debut in 1981, The Great Muppet Caper. The lively musical comedy features numerous Henson creations, including Kermit the Frog. After The Great Muppet Caper’s box office success, Henson’s follow-up - The Dark Crystal - was significantly darker in tone thanks to a screenplay written by David Odell, Henson’s former collaborator for ABC’s The Muppet Show. The Dark Crystal’s storyline takes place in a fantasy world known as Thra, with elf-like Gelflings squaring of against the ruling Skeksis. Netflix’s prequel, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, explores how the Gelflings originally discovered the dark truth and rebel against their oppressors, the Skeksis. The focal Gelflings are voiced by Taron Egerton (Rocketman), Anya Taylor-Joy (Glass), and Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones).

On YouTube, Netflix released a nearly three-minute bloopers reel for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. The clip features a variety of wise-talking puppets, with situational comedy being the driving force behind clever ad-libs and one-liners. For example, a group of singing (and missing) Podlings are referred to as a “typical musicians union," while others either scream maniacally or muse about cosmetic matters, such as ill-fitting wigs. Meanwhile, directors Louis Leterrier appears throughout, hoping to the calm the storm as puppets either break down in real time or break out into song. The clip offers a comedic look at puppets who just want to have fun while living in the magical realm that is Thra. Check out the blooper reel for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance below.

Aside from the primary Gelfing characters, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance boasts an all-star cast full of household names. Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey and Natalie Dormer voice Gelflings, along with Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl). As for the Skeksis, comedic performers such as Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Simon Pegg (The Cornetto Trilogy), and Awkwafina (The Farewell) all have supporting roles. Veteran actress Sigourney Weaver narrates The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Since releasing on August 30, the series has earned the "Certified Fresh” tag from Rotten Tomatoes.

While it’s still unclear if Netflix will produce The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance season 2, the streaming service does seem to have a major hit in the works. The series capitalizes on the ever-popular nostalgia trend, while the darker elements appeal to a young generation of streamers who may not be familiar with Henson’s collective filmography. Plus, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance has a diverse cast and relatable outsider premise, thus making it a truly universal series.
