Based on the popular Icewind Dale Trilogy of novels by R.A. Salvatore, Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance is an upcoming video game from Toque Games. D&D fans should be really excited, because it allows players to put themselves into the shoes (or leather boots) of some of the most iconic characters in the entire franchise. Here's what players need to know about each one.

The Crystal Shard was the first novel in the Icewind Dale Trilogy, releasing in 1988. The novel introduced readers to Drizzt Do'Urden, arguably the most famous D&D character of all time, but it also featured other iconic characters that fans have grown to love over the years. There are even references to them in the recent 5e campaign Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, which takes place about 400 years after the novel.

Since The Crystal Shard's debut, Drizzt Do'Urden has been the protagonist in over two dozen D&D novels, and he's already been featured in numerous Dungeons & Dragons video games as well. Drizzt is such a compelling character because he's a drow, which are typically evil, who is both good-hearted and heroic. Along with his panther companion, Guenhwyvar, Drizzt has been an adventurer through centuries of The Forgotten Realms. And for the first time ever, Dark Alliance will make Drizzt the star of his own video game.

The other main characters in Dark Alliance are popular as well. Bruenor Battlehammer is a dwarf who serves as an adoptive father to two other important characters from the Icewind Dale novels: Wulfgar and Catti-brie. Bruenor is the chief of a dwarven clan who goes on to become King of Mithral Hall. He is also responsible for forging the legendary warhammer, Aegis-fang, for Wulgar.

Wulfgar is a barbarian who is taken into the custody of Bruenor in The Crystal Shard. Although he has barbaric origins, Wulfgar goes on to become one of the greatest heroes of Icewind Dale and Ten-Towns. Catti-brie is a human who was adopted by Bruenor when she was young, and she grows up to become a great archer and fighter. She also serves as a love interest for Drizzt in some novels. And because Dark Alliance is a couch co-op game, it means players should get to control any of these iconic D&D characters, which is really exciting.

Although it was delayed behind its original 2020 release date, Dark Alliance should be releasing soon. Getting to play as these iconic D&D characters - like Drizzt Do'Urden, Bruenor Battlehammer, Wulfgar, and Catti-brie - is definitely one of the biggest draws to the game. Hopefully, more information regarding Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance will be announced soon.
