UPDATE: The mention of Matt Murdock's role in Spider-Man: No Way Home has since been removed from Daredevil's biography on Marvel.com. Screen Rant has reached out to Marvel for clarification on the change.  Our original article continues below.

The biography for Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock on the official Marvel website has connected the events of the Netflix series, Daredevil, with the character’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, making the show part of the official MCU canon. Prior to the current run of Disney+ shows that are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel had made a prior attempt to break into streaming television in a partnership with Netflix. This deal saw Marvel produce several series to be distributed onto the Netflix streaming platform that were decidedly more mature in tone and content than what audiences were accustomed to seeing on the big screen. These series included Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, The Punisher and, the first release of the slate, Daredevil.

When Daredevil premiered in 2015 it was hailed by fans and critics for its excellent writing and production values that showed a grittier side to the Marvel universe. While these shows were beloved by the fanbase, there was always a sense of doubt as to whether they were definitively connected to the MCU, especially when they were all cancelled after Disney set up its own streaming service. Fans of Daredevil were delighted this past holiday season not just to see the return of Vincent D'Onofrio as the Kingpin in the Hawkeye series but for Charlie Cox to cameo as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Now, the official Marvel website has definitively confirmed that the events of the Daredevil series are canon in the MCU via Matt Murdock's Biography. The page details the character's history recounting the events of the Daredevil show, such as his battle against the Kingpin and clashes with the Punisher and Elektra, as well as his role in the team up series, The Defenders. The record then concludes with his most recent appearance as Peter Parker's lawyer in Spider-Man: No Way Home, definitively tying his film appearance to his adventures on television. UPDATE: Daredevil's biography on Marvel.com has been updated to remove the final paragraph referencing the events of No Way Home. No Way Home connection in Daredevil Marvel.com biography

While Cox's reprisal of the role in No Way Home may have been proof enough for most fans, there was still a degree of doubt that this was the same version of Matt Murdock/Daredevil who had been getting into bloody, R-rated scraps. The MCU recently introduced and explored the concept of variants of established characters across the multiverse in the Disney+ series' Loki and What if...?. Given that the Netflix series' featured far more intense and adult content compared to the mainstream MCU, some fans speculated that Cox could have been playing a variant of Matt Murdock in No Way Home specific to the MCU who could better fit in with the family-friendly tone. However, it is now confirmed that Marvel Studios is fully embracing the Netflix shows as canon, backed up by the decision to include the shows completely uncensored on the Disney+ streaming service.

With this in mind, fans will now be wondering when they can next expect to see Cox's Daredevil return after the actor himself heavily hinted that audiences haven't seen the last of the character. Most fans seem to have a desire for Marvel Studios to pick up where Netflix left off, producing a season 4 of Daredevil or even a solo feature film of the character. There is also the possibility for Cox to have even more appearances in future MCU properties where it would be appropriate for Matt Murdock to show up, such as She-Hulk, which is being billed as a legal drama, or even another Spider-Man project. Regardless, fans will be happy to have definitive proof that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is even bigger, and more varied, than before.
