Vincent D'Onofrio, who plays the Marvel supervillain Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in the Daredevil series, thought that the show would return for a season 4. The live-action adaptation of the popular Marvel Comics hero which was created by writer/director Drew Goddard (The Martian, Cloverfield) ran on Netflix for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. The cast was led by English actor Charlie Cox in the lead role as Matt Murdock, and he was joined by Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Rosario Dawson, Ayelet Zurer, and Joanne Whalley. Jon Bernthal and Elodie Yung also appear as Frank Castle/Punisher and Elektra, respectively.

Daredevil revolves around lawyer-by-day Murdock, who uses his heightened senses from being blinded as a young boy to fight crime at night in the streets of New York City's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood as the titular hero. The series garnered universal acclaim throughout its three-season run, particularly for D'Onofrio's performance as the menacing antagonist Kingpin. After numerous rumors and speculation that some of the characters from the show would appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans finally got what they asked for as Kingpin had a brief yet explosive return in the recent Hawkeye series.

While speaking to Deadline about the Hawkeye finale, Vincent D'Onofrio took a moment to address the series that gave him one of his biggest roles to date. He mentioned that he was unaware that Daredevil would "end when it did," as he expected it to "continue for a few more years." He stated that there was still "a lot to explore" as far as his character was concerned even though he appeared quite prominently in the show. Check out his comments below:

“I didn’t know that Daredevil was going to end when it did. I thought it was going to continue for a few more years. There was a lot to explore there, there were many facets of my character to explore.”

Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in Daredevil

Following the strong critical reception of Daredevil season 3 after its premiere, few would have thought that it would also be the final season of the show. However, Daredevil proved to be just one out of six cancelled series at Netflix, as the streaming service also chose to discontinue their other Marvel-based projects including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders. Daredevil season 3 had ended with Murdock choosing to spare Wilson Fisk's life after overcoming him in an action-packed three-way fight scene in Fisk's penthouse which also involved Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye. Fisk agreed to return to prison but after his appearance in Hawkeye, there are question marks as to how he escaped/left prison once again. If an answer is revealed, it is expected to be in a future MCU project.

D'Onofrio isn't the only Daredevil character who could show up in the MCU. Recently, Kevin Feige said Charlie Cox would play Daredevil if the franchise ever wanted to bring the Man Without Fear in, confirming there wouldn't be a recast. It is unclear as to what kind of role the fan-favorite characters will play going forward, but the fact that their existence in the MCU is now a given suggests multiple possibilities with regards to their characters' roles in future Marvel films or series. This is sure to be an exciting prospect that will undoubtedly excite fans of the enthralling original Daredevil series.
