A key character from Frank Miller's Born Again is joining Daredevil season 3, as Joanne Whalley will play the role of Sister Maggie. The third season of Marvel/Netflix's Daredevil has been filming for 2 months now, meaning we've had plenty of set photos and casting news. Thanks to one batch of images, we know Wilson Fisk will go on trial in the new season as he attempts to wrestle back control of Hell's Kitchen and its criminal underworld. Meanwhile, the FBI will have a huge presence as it circles both Kingpin and Daredevil.

Daredevil season 3 has also added a mystery FBI agent character, as played by Wilson Bethel (Generation Kill). While a number of other agent roles have been added to the upcoming season, Bethel seems poised to play a variation on the anti-hero Sin-Eater from Marvel Comics. If that's the case, season 3 could see a bit of a repeat of the Punisher arc, albeit with someone inside the law. Meanwhile, the events of The Defenders strongly hinted that Frank Miller's iconic Born Again story would inform Daredevil season 3. Now, one of that comic book series' key players has been cast.

Marvel is confirming that Joanne Whalley (Wolf HalfThe White Princess) has joined the Daredevil season 3 in the role of Sister Maggie. Those who watched The Defenders know that's the name the nuns called out for assistance with Matt Murdock, who nearly died during the climax of the mini-series. For comics fans, she's the person who nurses the Devil of Hell's Kitchen back to health. She also happens to be his long-lost mother - in the comics, at least. For its part, Marvel is staying mum on the subject, describing Sister Maggie as simply "a strong-willed nun who speaks her mind and cares deeply about Matt’s safety."

Fans have been hoping for not only Born Again to be adapted on Daredevil, but for Matt's absentee mother to make an appearance. With season 3 taking Daredevil to new places, it looks as if the minds behind the show are finally ready to bring that story to life. Whalley will not only join Charlie Cox as a Brit posing as an American for Daredevil, but she will also now join Wolf Hall alum Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As for Matt - he will have a lot to deal with in Daredevil season 3, between recovering from the fallout of The Defenders to (maybe) seeing his mother again. And even when he returns home to New York, Matt will have to contend with both the FBI and Wilson Fisk (among other threats, possibly), once he resumes his day to day superhero activities as The Devil of Hell's Kitchen.
