Daredevil season 1 showrunner Steven DeKnight reveals whether he would return to the Marvel series, following news of its Disney+ revival. DeKnight served as a producer and showrunner for the first season of the series that was originally produced by Marvel Television and Netflix. The series starred Charlie Cox as the titular blind vigilante on a mission to defend the streets of New York City.
Debuting on Netflix in April 2015, Daredevil introduced Marvel fans to the "Devil of Hell's Kitchen", as blind lawyer Matt Murdock used his remarkable senses to clean out the criminals lurking in the darkened New York streets that escaped the gazes of the more larger-than-life Avengers. The series launched its own smaller interconnected world that explored the darker, more adult themes that the main MCU wouldn't tackle. Despite coming to a close in 2019 after the end of Marvel and Netflix's collaboration, it has been reported a new Daredevil series is in the works that will launch on Disney+, following appearances by many of Daredevil's cast members in recent MCU projects, as well as all six series of Marvel's Netflix series being added to the streaming platform. Following news of the series' initial development breaking, Daredevil's original showrunner has revealed whether he would return for the revived series.
One fan reached out to DeKnight through his personal Twitter account, asking whether he would return for the Disney+ revival series in any capacity. DeKnight revealed that while he would like to, he was committed to other work, and would like to see new creatives Matt Corman and Chris Ord's new take on the character. When asked what he was currently working on, DeKnight revealed that he couldn't say, but was excited about the project. Check out DeKnight's responses below.
Daredevil's revival follows the return of Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk to screens in Disney+'s Hawkeye series, where he served as the man behind Eleanor Bishop (Vera Farmiga), Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), and the Tracksuit Mafia's criminal enterprises. D'Onofrio's MCU appearance was soon followed by the appearance of Matt Murdock himself in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where the character utilized his skills as a lawyer to clear Peter Parker's (Tom Holland) name regarding accusations that he murdered Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in Spider-Man: Far From Home's climax. Prior to confirmation that the series would be revived, Cox had been open about his desire to return, revealing that not only was he confident in a revival happening but that he had an idea of what the character's MCU future might be.
While viewers celebrate Daredevil's return, there are concerns about a Disney+ revival toning down the series' darker content, due to being more closely associated with the MCU than previous appearances, despite Cox being open to a toned-down return. As such, it is understandable to see why there'd be interest in seeing the original creatives return for the series revival. While DeKnight is uninvolved with the upcoming Daredevil show, the original showrunner's faith in the new creative team is encouraging.
