Netflix's Daredevil gets a stunning and eerily accurate comic book cover in the style of classic Marvel art thanks to a talented fan. The show was the first of Netflix's Marvel collaborations, releasing back in 2015. It was followed by Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Punisher, Iron Fist, and the ensemble show The Defenders. The shows all had varying degrees of success, but Daredevil was undoubtedly a favorite among fans and redeemed the character on-screen following the woeful 2003 movie starring Ben Affleck and Colin Farell.
British actor Charlie Cox took on the role of Matt Murdock, a blind man who is able to use his other senses to "see." The first season was an origin story, showing Murdock taking on the alter ego of Daredevil while coming up against Vincent D'Onofrio's terrifying villain, Kingpin. The show has recently come in for criticism due to allegations from its Asian cast, saying that their storylines were cut and that they weren't invited to the season 2 premiere.
Artist John Black has posted a stunning piece of fan art for the show, taking one of the Matt Murdock character posters for season 1, and re-drawing it in the style of classic Marvel comic art. Black gives Murdock back his trademark flaming red hair but otherwise translates the poster with stunning accuracy. The level of detail is perfect, right down to the trashcans in an alley in the background. You can see the art below.
Black, who specializes in creating fan art in the style of classic Marvel comics, also includes a split image showing just how well he's managed to interpret the poster, right down to Murdock's split lip. Previous work by Black includes comic art interpretations of most of the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the X-Men movies and some DC characters. There's no doubting Black's talent, and this fan art only makes you wonder what he could do with other posters from the Netflix stable of characters. Black promises that he'll release a poster from season 2, featuring The Punisher, but it would be great to see him give the classic art treatment to all of the Marvel TV characters.
It's also fun to speculate whether Marvel would ever commission an artist like Black to produce comic-book-style posters for any of their upcoming releases. It would be a refreshing break from the typical movie poster style favored by the MCU, and would additionally provide some neat collector's edition posters for fans to seek out. Based on his interpretation of this Daredevil poster, Black certainly has the expertise to do a good job of it.
