Charlie Cox reveals his reaction to seeing the gold Daredevil costume he would be wearing for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law for the first time. His new helmet made a cameo on episode 5 of the series, titled "Mean, Green, and Straight Poured into These Jeans," which aired on Disney+ on September 15, teasing the brand-new costume that eschews his typical red and black in favor of a gold and red design. His upcoming appearance will be his second in the MCU proper, after surprising fans with a quick scene in 2021's megahit Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Cox began playing the character of Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil, in 2015 for the Netflix Marvel series Daredevil. The show provided the origin story for the hero as he transformed himself from a blind lawyer with heightened senses into a bona fide vigilante hero defending his New York City neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen. That series aired for three seasons through 2018, with Murdock also appearing in the one-season run of The Defenders, a crossover with Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. Although all four shows were nominally part of the MCU (including references to the events of 2012's The Avengers), none of the characters made an appearance in any Marvel property until the villain Wilson Fisk (played by Vincent D'Onofrio) appeared in 2021's Hawkeye in tandem with Cox's Spider-Man role.

Now, Rotten Tomatoes shares a video from a red carpet event where they asked Cox how he felt after seeing the gold costume for the first time. He reveals that when that moment came, he didn't yet know when he would get to wear it, other than the fact that it would not be for his cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He was bowled over, because, after playing the character for so long, he has become "emotionally connected to the fans' response." Read his full quote below:

So I had to go to LA to have a fitting, and I walk in - I can say this now - I walk in. I knew I wasn't going to wear it in [Spider-Man: No Way Home], I knew that much, but whilst we were doing Spider-Man we were getting ready to do She-Hulk, and so I got to go to LA to a fitting, and I walk in and the suit is hanging there. But then there's a drawing on the wall and it has the gold and red.

And I was like, "No way." It's funny because when you play the character this long, it's like you're emotionally connected to the fans' response. So you see something like that and it means something to you, because you know what it means - what it's going to mean.

Like, you start to have a sense of how people are going to respond to that. So I saw that, and then they come in with that, and I'm like, "Aw man, this is unreal."

Daredevil Helmet In She-Hulk Episode 5

It is quite common for Marvel superheroes to get an upgrade. Indeed, this is something that has recently happened to David Harbour's Red Guardian for his second MCU appearance, in the upcoming antihero movie Thunderbolts. Therefore, it is difficult to tell if this will be his consistent crime-fighting uniform going forward in the MCU, as he is set to make an appearance in the Hawkeye spinoff Echo as well as starring in a brand-new series titled Daredevil: Born Again.

However, it seems likely this will be his go-to look throughout Phase 5. He was wearing a civilian suit during No Way Home, presumably to preserve the surprise of his costume reveal in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. By providing such a big fanfare for the upgraded costume, this would seem to indicate that Marvel knows what a big deal this is going to be for Daredevil fans.
