Kingpin actor and Marvel Cinematic Universe baddie Vincent D’Onofrio reacts to the announcement of Daredevil: Born Again. D’Onofrio made his debut as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in Daredevil, which ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. Following the show’s critically acclaimed season 3, Netflix/ABC canceled its slate of Marvel shows, including Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica JonesThe PunisherAgent of S.H.I.E.L.D, and Daredevil. Despite fan campaigns to resurrect the Defenders universe, viewers were left to wonder whether they’d ever see Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock take on D’Onofrio's Kingpin again.

Last December, Murdock and Fisk made their official MCU debuts in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Disney+’s Hawkeye, respectively. No Way Home saw Cox cameo as Peter Parker’s attorney and, in Hawkeye, D’Onofrio reprised his role as the leader of the Tracksuit Mafia and Maya Lopez’s “Uncle” in its final two episodes. In March, it was revealed that Disney/Marvel Studios was making a Daredevil reboot show, which will see Cox and D’Onofrio together again. Now, at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again was confirmed as part of the MCU Phase 5 in Spring of 2024.

Given the series is two years away, Daredevil and Kingpin are set to appear elsewhere in the MCU before Born Again. During SDCC, Daredevil’s new MCU costume was revealed in a trailer for Disney+’s She-Hulk, which will feature Cox’s lawyer alongside Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters. Following Daredevil’s appearance in Marvel Studios’ next live-action series, he and Kingpin will appear in the Hawkeye spin-off Echo. In Hawkeye’s finale, Maya seemingly shot and killed Kingpin as the camera cut away. The crime boss will presumably appear with an eye patch (in-line with the comics) in the spin-off, with Daredevil rumored to be searching for Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones—which bodes well for those hoping Netflix’s Marvel shows are MCU canon.

D’Onofrio has said that his Hawkeye character and Daredevil villain are the same people (despite his apparent power-up). It’s unclear how/if Daredevil: Born Again will tie into the Netflix series, which was created by Drew Goddard. The upcoming revival/reboot is being helmed by Matt Corman and Chris Ord (Covert Affairs). As a soft reboot, it may connect as many dots between the two projects as possible. However, it remains to be seen if Born Again can live up to the gritty, TV-MA action of its predecessor. For those unfamiliar with D’Onofrio’s inimitable antagonist (or his iconic dialogue), all three seasons of Daredevil are available to stream on Disney+.
