Daredevil: Deborah Ann Woll Hopes to Explore Karen's Past in Season 3

Season 3 of Netflix's Daredevil is on the way and Deborah Ann Woll thinks the upcoming adventures of the Man Without Fear is a perfect time to explore Karen Page's past. Woll's character has been a fixture in the Netflix Marvel Universe from the beginning, but the series has only scratched the surface of her backstory, let alone the fact that she rebuffed the strong-arm tactics of the Kingpin's right-hand man James Wesley (Toby Leonard Moore) with a little murder. Needless to say, there's a lot about the person Karen is that the show has yet to explore.

The upcoming season of Daredevil may well be a turning point for the series, after the events of this summer's The Defenders miniseries have put Matt Murdock's future in question, with his friends and allies believing him to be dead. Of course, we know that's not the case, as he was shown to be convalescing in what appears to be a nod toward the celebrated 'Born Again' storyline from the comics. If that's the case, then it's rough times ahead for everyone, not just the Devil of Hell's Kitchen.

The story presents a sharp turn in Page's arc that sees her strung out and addicted to heroin, and in a moment of weakness selling Daredevil's identity; information that eventually finds its way into Kingpin's possession. While it seems unlikely that Karen would find herself on such a dramatic downward spiral in the TV series, an exploration of the character's past could offer another path to creating a similar narrative. In a recent interview with Collider, Woll expressed her desire to see Karen's past "unwrapped", acknowledging how the show has been "hinting" at it for quite a while. Woll said:

"Definitely her past. We’ve been hinting at it, and I hope that we eventually unwrap that candy. That’s cool to me. Really, my favorite thing to work on with the character is that doggedness and pushiness. Karen is pushy, and I like that. I like it in a female character because I think it’s a quality that we historically have disliked in women. I think it can be a strength, as well as a weakness. It can be one of those wonderful, complex aspects of her. She won’t let things go, even if it gets her hurt, or if it gets someone else hurt. She’s out there, she’s gonna get the truth, and she can’t stop thinking about it or let it go, and she never will. That’s a really fun part of her personality to play with."

Since Karen plays such a prominent role in the Netflix MCU, having appeared in both seasons of Daredevil, The Defenders, and season 1 of The Punisher, you have to wonder whether or not the series will even want to deconstruct the character as the comics did. But then again, it might not have to. Incoming showrunner Erik Oleson has already begun working on a different take on the Kingpin that has Vincent D'Onofrio excited to make a return to his character. With a villain as prominent as Wilson Fisk making his big comeback, there will likely be some wiggle room to examine Karen's past without tearing her down completely.

As such, with the return of Kingpin, the potential to uncover Karen's past, and a new showrunner, there's a lot to look forward to in Daredevil season 3. So far, it seems like all systems are go, as Woll says of Oleson, "He’s one of the most enthusiastic showrunners that I’ve ever worked with," which bodes well for a series that finds it difficult to keep its head writers around.
