Both season 3 of Daredevil and season 2 of Iron Fist will shoot before the end of the year, but one will be getting a shorter episode order. With the premiere of The Defenders in less than two weeks, the initial deal Marvel and Netflix struck with the city of New York will be well past the point of completion. With a bonus season of Daredevil, both companies have proven their commitment to each other and the city. What's more, The Punisher has since been added to the slate and new seasons of all four core shows are on their way.
During Comic-Con, season 2 of Iron Fist was announced, bringing Misty Knight into Danny Rand's orbit. The show will also have a new showrunner, promising a different direction for the series. Given that The Defenders will help complete Danny's arc from season 1 of Iron Fist, season 2 could bring us a more fully realized hero. That said, it may also feature an abbreviated episode count.
Deadline is reporting that Marvel and Netflix have added an additional 23 episodes of content to their production slate in New York. Along with all of the existing shows and the upcoming first seasons of The Defenders and The Punisher, that will bring the total episode count to 86, with the latter receiving the traditional 13 episodes and the former shortening things to just 8. Season 2 of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, meanwhile, will consist of 26 episodes (likely 13 each) and the additional 23 will be for new seasons of Daredevil and Iron Fist. All told, the total episodes produced will be 135 and all are said to be completed by the end of 2017.
The report is interesting for a number of reasons. We've heard that Daredevil will be shooting this year already, but Sacha Dhawan (Davos) said Iron Fist wouldn't shoot until December. It looks as if it will in fact shoot earlier, with Dhawan likely joining later in the production for his smaller role. By doing so, both Iron Fist and Daredevil will finish filming their new seasons before the year is out.
The other intriguing piece of information is that Daredevil season 3 and Iron Fist will only be 23 episodes combined. That likely means one will remain at 13 episodes and the other will only be 10. One of the biggest criticisms about the Marvel/Netflix shows is that even the short 13 episode seasons stretch for plot. By sticking with 10 episodes, one show could streamline things. It's anyone's guess at this point which show it will be, as we could see a tighter season of Daredevil or Iron Fist could be getting a downgrade given its less-than-stellar reception. On the other hand, it could simply mean that the final three episodes of the series in question will film later, in 2018.
As for where both new stories will go, The Defenders will open up a lot of possibilities. Matt will be coming out of retirement, so we could see him quit again before his new solo season. Meanwhile, he and Foggy have to work out a few things. For Danny, season 2 of Iron Fist could see him finally put on a costume and become a superhero. Hopefully, we'll know more about both shows soon.
The Defenders premieres on August 18 on Netflix, with The Punisher premiering later in 2017. Additional seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage are expected to air in 2018, with the new season of Iron Fist coming sometime in the future.
