Daredevil and the other Marvel Netflix shows have come to Disney+ as "The Defenders Saga," but one aspect of their move to this streaming service will disappoint fans. In 2015, an unprecedented partnership between Marvel Television and Netflix launched a range of superhero adventures unlike any Marvel had made before. The Marvel Netflix shows eschewed the cosmic stakes of the MCU and instead focused on a group of street-level vigilantes whose adventures were brutal and bloody. Marvel Television followed the same format as the mainstream MCU, introducing heroes in their own separate series ahead of a team-up event miniseries, The Defenders.

Daredevil and the other Marvel Netflix shows have now arrived on Disney+. Internationally, they've been rolled out as part of the Star package, but in the United States, the addition of these shows has prompted Disney to add age verification; they're certainly not standard Disney fare but are instead decidedly R-rated. Many viewers had hoped the Disney+ release would indicate whether or not Daredevil and the other Marvel Netflix series were considered canon in the MCU, given Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio have now reprised their popular roles as part of the mainstream MCU. Unfortunately, Disney seems to have avoided making a statement one way or another.

Disney+ has categorized Marvel Netflix as "The Defenders Saga," and the shows remain noticeably absent from the "Marvel Cinematic Universe in Timeline Order" section. They've been added in release order of the first season: DaredevilJessica JonesLuke CageIron FistThe Defenders, and The Punisher. It's not particularly ideal because there's actually a loose narrative thread running through them all; anyone who sits down to watch Daredevil will be bewildered when they get to season 3 because Matt Murdock's status quo is changed considerably by the events of The Defenders.

Are Daredevil & Marvel Netflix Shows MCU Canon On Disney+?

Disney Plus Defenders Saga

At the moment, it's difficult to say whether Daredevil and the other Marvel Netflix shows should be considered canon for the mainstream MCU. Marvel is yet to make any official comment, and even the actors themselves don't seem entirely sure. Vincent D'Onofrio seems to be convinced he's playing the same iteration of Kingpin in Hawkeye, but Charlie Cox favors a soft reboot of Daredevil. While it has to be noted entries from "The Defenders Saga" don't appear on the "Marvel Cinematic Universe in Timeline Order" section, the current categorization feels like an attempt to avoid making a statement on this issue right now. It's quite possible Marvel execs are still making up their minds, and only time will tell.

In the meantime, it's possible the structure of "The Defenders Saga" - less than ideal because it ignores the narrative flow running through the shows - is actually mandated by the limitations of the Disney+ platform. Disney has never needed to separate out different seasons before, and it's possible they don't have the functionality at this time. If that is indeed the case, they'll need to develop it before one of the current Marvel Studios Disney+ shows gets a second season, because they'll need to separate those two seasons in "Marvel Cinematic Universe in Timeline Order." Hopefully, when that happens, Marvel will also add Daredevil and the rest of "The Defenders Saga" to that Disney+ category as well.
