In the wake of Marvel's huge Devil's Reign event comes a new chapter in the life of the man without fear, Daredevil. Daredevil has always been a Marvel mainstay, but back in 2015, Netflix released the first season of the live-action show and brought a new surge of popularity for the character. The series was dark and gritty, and new cover art for Chip Zdarksy's upcoming Daredevil run shows that Marvel is aware of what made the Netflix series so great.
Three seasons of Daredevil plus an ensemble Defenders series put Matt Murdock on a brutal and bloody street fighting mission to cleanse the streets of Hell's Kitchen from criminal activity. With a fourth Daredevil season set in the MCU on the way, many fans are hoping that Disney will continue with the dark and gritty theme that Netflix established. At least with the comics, it seems that fans can rest assured that that hope will come true.
Chip Zdarksy's Daredevil run releases on July 13th, and variant cover art by Dan Panosian shows that Marvel will deliver on what made the Netflix series so great. In the cover, Daredevil and Elektra are shown walking down a street in what appears to be Chinatown. It is raining heavily, and the two are reflected in a puddle, except in this reflection they are surrounded by members of the Hand. Like acclaimed artist Peach Momoko's Daredevil cover art, this is promising that the comics will show off a new, grittier side of Matt Murdock. This artwork is a one-take Netflix fight scene waiting to happen.
One can really feel the punches in a different version of Panosian's cover art (a variant of a variant, if you will). Originally posted in a tweet, the different version of the cover art shows the same image in black and white, and this one really drives the brutality home. Looking at this aesthetic makes one wish that the entire series would be penned in black and white, and the only color used at all would be red for obvious reasons. How awesome would it be to see the upcoming Daredevil vs. Punisher showdown in monochrome with splotches of red?
Chip Zdarksy's new Daredevil run promises huge things for the character, and Dan Panosian's cover art delivers on that promise. Marvel is humbly taking a page out of Netflix's book and allowing Daredevil to be the bloody, gritty, street-fight-filled series it was always meant to be.
