A new Daredevil: Born Again fan poster showcases a terrifying look for Jon Bernthal's Punisher following the announcement that the actor would return to the role in the Disney+ series. Bernthal premiered as the Punisher in the old Netflix Daredevil series during season 2. His Frank Castle went on to headline his own The Punisher series on Netflix, consisting of two seasons. Following the show's cancellation exactly a month after the premiere of The Punisher season 2 in 2019, Bernthal now gets to reprise the role in Daredevil: Born Again, joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Digital artist clements.ink shared on Instagram a Daredevil: Born Again fan poster with an eerie depiction of Punisher.

What happened to Bernthal's Punisher between Netflix and he new Daredevil series on Disney+ will likely be revealed during Daredevil: Born Again. The actor is the third confirmed return for the series from the Netflix Defenders universe, with the other two being Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/ Kingpin, after having returned in Disney+'s Hawkeye, and Daredevil: Born Again leading man Cox. Bernthal's return as the Punisher provides some clues about the new Daredevil series.

What Jon Bernthal’s Punisher Return Means For Daredevil: Born Again?

Daredevil: Born Again has a different job from most of the MCU series, which either focused on smaller heroes or introduced entirely new characters to the MCU. Marvel Studios has the job of honoring the Netflix Daredevil series, and Born Again will payoff a Punisher tease. After debuting in season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil, Frank Castle would end his time in the series by saying in the season finale, "See you around, Red." However, the two characters never interacted again in the Netflix Defenders universe, an error that Marvel will now correct with Daredevil: Born Again.

With Bernthal's return as the Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again guaranteed, there is a strong possibility that other Netflix Marvel heroes might make their way into the Cox-led series next year. Daredevil: Born Again received an unprecedented 18-episode order by Disney+, making it by far the longest MCU series on the streamer. The new Daredevil show might contain MCU cameos, as star Cox has made it clear that he would be interested in connecting with other MCU characters, and the long episode order allows for more Netflix heroes to make the jump to the MCU.

While Cox has talked said in interviews that he believes Daredevil: Born Again will not be as dark as the Netflix series was, the announcement that Bernthal will be returning as the Punisher in the Disney+ series should give some hope for those who wanted the new show to have a similar tone to Netflix's Daredevil. Bernthal has shared in the past that he would only return to the role if it were not a watered-down version of the Punisher, which bodes well for a darker tone. Whether Punisher is a villain in Daredevil: Born Again or acts more heroic, it can help with that more mature tone.
