Daredevil: Born Again Digs Deeper Into Its Characters Says Kingpin Star

According to Vincent D'Onofrio, who portrays Kingpin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Daredevil: Born Again will go deeper into its characters. While Netflix's Daredevil series won't be back for season 4, the show is getting a semi-continuation through Daredevil: Born Again, which is currently in development for Disney+. The MCU drama will again star Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, along with D'Onofrio back as Kingpin, as both their Netflix characters returned to the franchise in Phase Four. Unlike other Disney+ shows from Marvel Studios, Daredevil: Born Again season 1 will have 18 episodes, making it the biggest commitment of all their original series thus far.

While Daredevil: Born Again won't arrive until 2024 as part of Phase Five, D'Onofrio has already begun to share a few teases of what is coming up in the Disney+ series. During a spotlight panel at this year's Salt Lake City FanX, D'Onofrio spoke about his excitement for Daredevil: Born Again. Despite not being able to give away any spoilers, the MCU star promised everyone that the series would dig deeper into the characters than previously. Check out what D'Onofrio said below:

"You guys have no idea what you're in store for with [Daredevil: Born Again.] I know a little bit more than you guys, and all I can say is, during that next series, you're not going to be thinking about anything but the next episode. I promise. I'm trying to stick to the rules, so I will only say that Charlie and I are going to be given the chance to dig deeper than ever before with our characters."

How Born Again Can Dig Deeper Into Its Characters

Even though Daredevil: Born Again isn't directly continuing the events of the canceled Netflix drama, the Phase Five series will still explore the characters that viewers followed for three seasons before their Phase Four appearances. Despite the fact that Daredevil did solid character work for several characters, including Matt and Wilson Fisk, it sounds as if they will have even more space to flesh out the players. The Netflix drama had multiple series regulars, and perhaps Daredevil: Born Again will have a smaller cast, which would allow the Disney+ show to emphasize Wilson and Matt. Kingpin had a significant role in Hawkeye season 1, while Matt had appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home and two episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law season 1.

However, neither of them got to establish what they have been up to since the events of Daredevil season 3, which ended on several big notes. The least information Matt gave recently was that he's still an attorney and working in Hell's Kitchen. But never once did Matt bring up how things have been going for him or with his friends Foggy Nelson and Karen Page. Despite Kingpin's crucial arc during Hawkeye, the writers didn't even hint at what he's been going through since the end of Daredevil season 3. However, with Daredevil: Born Again season 1, not only will the semi-sequel allow for new layers to be explored, but also reference what Matt and Wilson dealt with respectively over the years before their arcs in Phase Five.

While it makes sense for Daredevil: Born Again not to be a direct sequel to the Netflix series, it's also hard to imagine the writers for the new show ignoring their respective mythologies that lasted for three seasons. Because of how many years it has been between the end of Daredevil and whenever Daredevil: Born Again launches in 2024, there is a lot of exposition they can utilize to build out their larger MCU futures further, and even do flashbacks if need be. Hopefully, more details about Daredevil: Born Again will begin to emerge in the coming months.
