Superstar writer Chip Zdarsky’s Daredevil run will come to an end this November with issue #36. However, while this may mark the end of the current series, Zdarsky is not done with the character, and promises more is to come. The issue will go on sale in print and digital November 17.

Chip Zdarsky has made a name for himself working on creator-owned titles such as Sex Criminals and Stillwater at Image, as well as other Marvel titles such as Spider-Man: Life Story and Howard the Duck. In 2019, Marvel launched an all-new Daredevil title, with Zdarsky as the writer. In the two years he has been at the helm, he and his collaborators have been responsible for some of the most consequential developments in Daredevil's recent history. Zdarksy’s run has seen Wilson Fisk ascend to the role of Mayor of New York City while also embarking on a romantic relationship with his former employee Typhoid Mary. Meanwhile, Daredevil was put on trial for murder and sent to prison. Daredevil’s imprisonment would have left Hell’s Kitchen without a protector if Elektra had not stepped up. As the new Daredevil, she is waging a one-woman war on crime in Hell’s Kitchen. All of these developments will come to a head this November in the final issue of Zdarksy’s current run.

More information on this development in Daredevil’s life was just released by Marvel. The publisher was clear that this was only the end of the current run and Zdarsky has taken to Twitter to assure fans he was not leaving. The press release did not offer much in the way of details, other than teasing that, with the wedding of Kingpin and Typhoid Mary, “calamity [is] right around the corner for the happy couple.” Zdarksy explained that his entire run thus far had been building to this, and reemphasized that this was just the “beginning” for Daredevil.

Daredevil is a character that can bring out the best in a creator. Frank Miller, Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, and Andy Diggle all made names for themselves working on Daredevil. Daredevil has brought out the best in Chip Zdarsky, and he and his collaborators have taken the character to new and exciting places. A superhero standing trial for murder - and going to prison for it - all while remaining in their costumed identity is new and unique, as is making Elektra the new Daredevil. When readers last saw the Devil of Hell's Kitchen, he had ascended to the top of the prison ladder, ready to make a corrupt warden answer for his crimes.

Will Daredevil remain in power in prison? And what kind of effect would it have on him? In the classic Shadowlands story, Daredevil took control of the Hand and attempted to steer them in a benevolent direction. Will history repeat itself here? Furthermore, what is the “calamity” promised for Kingpin and Mary Bullseye? And will Elektra readily give up the mantle of Daredevil? There's still a lot of questions left to be answered. Chip Zdarksy has put his own, unique spin on Daredevil, and his first run comes to an end this November with issue 36.
