A comment on the thread talks about it being a social media tactic to gain followers that many influencers use. “It’s quite smart and there seems to be a lot of psychology behind it,” adds the user. The fan explains that having a private IG adds exclusivity and creates curiosity about a celeb, and also discourages a person from unfollowing them. While hitting "unfollow," Instagram gives the user a prompt “are you sure?” making the person think twice. The “illusion of exclusivity and ease of access” stops one from unfollowing, thus helping the celebrity to maintain their consistent follower count.
The Darcey & Stacey viewer shares that this trick helps people in reality TV far more as their “lives revolve so heavily around drama” and because they’re constantly talked about.
