Danny Elfman No Longer Scoring 'Green Hornet'

Frequent Tim Burton collaborator Danny Elfman will no longer be responsible for scoring next year's Seth Rogen superhero vehicle, the big screen adaptation of The Green Hornet.

A scheduling conflict is reportedly the reason for Elfman's departure from director Michel Gondry's Green Hornet, which is being converted to 3D and will hit regular and IMAX theaters next January - a month usually considered the dumping ground for less-than-stellar Hollywood pics.

Elfman is set to score new films from the likes of director Gus Van Sant (Milk) and Paul Haggis (Crash) - not to mention whatever Tim Burton releases next - so he'll keep plenty busy in the future.

The Oingo Boingo co-founder is no stranger to the comic book/superhero movie genre, having created what for many remains the iconic Batman orchestral theme.  He also produced the music for the first two entries in the Men in Black and Spider-Man franchises, as well as Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk.

Composer James Newton Howard is currently pegged as a potential replacement for Elfman on the Green Hornet.  Howard collaborated with Hans Zimmer on the scores of Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and is already set to score next year's Green Lantern as well.

This new twist in the development of the Green Hornet could go either way.  Elfman's brand of zany musical accompaniment might have been a perfect fit for the less-than-serious superhero adventure, though his most recent work in Alice in Wonderland was kind of unmemorable.

Newton Howard is a multiple Oscar-nominated composer himself, whose musical score has arguably been the best part of director M. Night Shyamalan's output over the past few years.  He is an overall solid choice, though he does not seem as natural a fit for the Green Hornet's sillier tone as Elfman does.

The Green Hornet will arrive in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters in the U.S. on January 14th, 2011.
