It's a rare occurrence whenever an actor is allowed to participate in the writing process of their character. But in Danny DeVito's case, the actor famous for playing the Penguin in 1991's Batman Returns is doing precisely that, and is one of a handful of writers and artists collaborating on the new Gotham City Villains book, a collection of stories concerning the various villains of the Dark Knight. DC has just released a preview of the issue and the stories within.

Batman Returns was the sequel to Tim Burton's successful 1989 Batman film, but it wasn't received as warmly as the first. A much darker and somewhat somber tone did not go over well with parents who brought their children to the film, who were perhaps expecting more action and less violence and gothic horror imagery. However, Danny DeVito's Penguin was singled out as an enjoyable aspect of the film; he was made out to be a tragic figure who was despised by elite Gothamites because of his looks and his status (and stature).

Now Danny DeVito works alongside Dan Mora and others in Gotham City Villains, a massive one-hundred page issue. Promotional material from DCcomics.com promises a fun heist story - and a potentially romantic story as well - between Oswald Cobblepott and the other major villainous star of Batman Returns, Catwoman. Other villains set to appear include well-known foes like the Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, and Ra's al Ghul, in addition to second-stringers like the Mad Hatter and Killer Moth. There is, however, one notable absence: the Joker - but this can easily be explained by the fact that the Joker appears so frequently in Batman media, he would hardly be missed if the writers chose to let him sit this one out.

In regards to Danny DeVito's character, the Penguin is seeing a resurgence in popularity as of late. He's had a reboot of sorts in the comics that made the character far more dangerous (and angry), and he's set to be one of the featured villains in 2022's The Batman, played by Colin Farrell. With the increased anticipation toward the film after the delay of its release date, it's no wonder that DC has decided to capitalize on renewed interest in the Penguin by bringing in the first actor who portrayed the villain onscreen (excluding the late Burgess Meredith, who played the Penguin in the 1966 Batman TV show).

It will be interesting to see Danny DeVito's ideas for his character on the page. The Penguin is often eclipsed by Catwoman, the Riddler and other, more colorful characters. Danny DeVito's story about the Penguin and others will finally be seen by fans when Gotham City Villains becomes available Tuesday, November 30th, 2021.
