Despite appearing in the Harry Potter franchise together, Daniel Radcliffe admits he has a weird relationship with Robert Pattinson. Before he was the lead in another popular YA film franchise, Pattinson made a key appearance in the Harry Potter series as Cedric Diggory, an earnest Hufflepuff who is chosen to be one of the champions in the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Pattinson shared a few scenes with Radcliffe (who played Harry in all 8 movies), including Cedric's death in the final act, which serves as a major turning point for the entire series.

Since then, Pattinson and Radcliffe's careers have diverged. Radcliffe stuck with Harry Potter until the very end and, in the years after the franchise's conclusion, made a name for himself in the indie sphere. He's also built up a solid list of stage credits on the West End and Broadway. Pattinson, meanwhile, went on to play heartthrob vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise. Once that came to an end, Pattinson turned to independent movies for several years. In 2022, he'll return to the world of blockbusters with The Batman.

Because they appeared in a major franchise together, some fans might believe Pattinson and Radcliffe are good friends. That isn't quite the case, as Radcliffe revealed in a recent interview on The Jonathan Ross Show (via CinemaBlend). The actor explained that they haven't spoken in a very long time, though he had kind things to say about Pattinson from when they worked together on The Goblet of Fire. Radcliffe said:

Literally the first, I was in New York about to do Equus, and I was on the Westside Highway and I turned around and saw this billboard and I was like, ‘What, I know that guy!’ I hadn’t heard of the Twilight books at the time; I hadn’t been aware of that phenomenon. And so yeah, it’s odd. We have a very strange relationship now where we basically only communicate through journalists. We haven’t seen each other in ages. Because everyone assumes we’re kind of great mates, but I’ve met him, he’s a lovely guy when I worked with him.

Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter and Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Seeing as they only starred in one movie together, it isn't too surprising that Radcliffe and Pattinson aren't actually the best of friends. It's clear that, at least on Radcliffe's end, they're still fond of each other. Nevertheless, Radcliffe is bound to be closer with his other Harry Potter co-stars, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. The three of them will reunite next year for an HBO Max reunion special, which will look back on the Harry Potter franchise's legacy. Perhaps Pattinson can put in a quick appearance too.

Though they might not be close, it might be interesting for Pattinson and Radcliffe to discuss their similar careers. Harry Potter and Twilight are two very different juggernauts, but at their core, they are both hugely successful book series that became blockbuster franchises. Radcliffe and Pattinson might have a few shared experiences they could bond over, including with their later transitions to indie fare. For now, Radcliffe has set the record straight on his relationship with Pattinson, so now at least fans know the truth.
