Dancing with the Stars season 31's Halloween Night brought some tricks and treats to the ballroom, with spine-tingling dances that led to some shocking leaderboard rankings. Front-runners dropped, while other stars shone brightly, as the couples performed two dances: an individual routine, and a team dance. Vinny Guadagnino and Trevor Donovan were given the opportunity to choose their team members, because they were at the bottom of the leaderboard the previous week. For Team Wicked, Vinny chose Shangela and Gleb Savchenko, Gabby Windey and Alan Bersten, Heidi D'Amelio and Artem Chigvintsev, and Jordin Sparks and Brandon Armstrong to join him and his partner, Koko Iwasaki. They danced to "The Witches Are Back" from Hocus Pocus 2, and scored 33 out of 40 points. Trevor chose the Team Scream members, who joined him and his partner, Emma Slater. They were Charli D'Amelio and Mark Ballas, Wayne Brady and Witney Carson, and Daniel Durant and Britt Stewart. They danced to "Heads Will Roll" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and earned 39 out of 40 points.

Although Vinny and Kolo were once again at the bottom of the DWTS leaderboard, they were not in the bottom two. Instead, the DWTS judges, Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, Len Goodman, and Bruno Tonioli, had to decide if they wanted to save Jordin and Brandon, who placed eighth, or Heidi and Artem, who placed seventh. Derek and Bruno saved Jordin and Brandon, but Carrie Ann voted to save Heidi and Artem, as did Len. As head judge, Len's vote counts twice, so Jordin and Brandon were sent home. The judges struggled with their decisions, because both couples had come so far in the competition. The leaderboard was greatly affected by the team dance scores, keeping some celebrities at the top, while dropping others down. It was a truly surprising episode, which illustrated how unpredictable DWTS can be.

Gabby had a bit of a tough week, because her regular partner Val Chmerkovskiy tested positive for COVID-19, and was unable to dance. Alan, who was eliminated the previous week (along with his partner, Jessie James Decker) filled in for him. They earned 38 points for their Argentine tango to “Shivers” by District 78 ft. Mikayla Lynn, which originally landed them in fourth place. However, the team dance score dropped them down to sixth place, with a total of 71 points.

Trevor & Emma Tied For First With Charli & Mark For The First Time

Trevor Donovan and Emma Slater on DWTS' Halloween Night

For the first time this season, Trevor and Emma placed first, tying with Charli and Mark, who held onto the top spot once again. Charli and Mark have placed first every week so far, occasionally tying with other couples, but also standing alone at the top. Both couples scored a total of 78 points, which brought them up to first place. Before the team dances, they had both been in second place, with 39 points, for their individual routines. DWTS star celebs Charli and Mark performed a stunning Argentine tango to "Tanquera" by Fabio Hager Sexteto. They lost some rehearsal time together because Mark had a flare-up with his lower back, so Charli had to practice with Pasha Pashkov, who was eliminated earlier in the season, along with his partner, Teresa Giudice. Trevor and Emma performed a hauntingly beautiful contemporary dance to "Ghost (Acoustic) by Justin Bieber, which brought everyone, including Trevor, to tears.

The DWTS Halloween Night episode featured twists and turns that fit the spirit of the holiday. The creepy costumes and spooky dances captivated the audience. As DWTS heads towards the semi-finals, there are sure to be even more shocking developments with the leaderboard, and each elimination will be more difficult for the judges. There are so many incredible season 31 couples, which means that it's challenging to predict who will win the DTWS Mirror Ball Trophy.
