Writer/producer Damon Lindelof and actor/writer Simon Pegg have been keeping quite busy of late, and both have multiple projects on the horizon that should make their respective fans happy. Now the former is setting to work on a new movie for Disney - and the latter has expressed his hopes to start writing his next collaborative effort with Edgar Wright before the likely-delayed Star Trek 2 begins production.
As it were, Lindelof is part of the Star Trek sequel screenwriting team; however, he was also involved in scripting two other hotly-anticipated science-fiction films due to hit theaters in the next year: this summer's Cowboys & Aliens, and Ridley Scott's currently-filming Alien semi-prequel, Prometheus.
Now Deadline has learned that Lindelof has signed a seven-figure deal with Disney to write and produce an original sci-fi film, tentatively titled 1952. No word yet on what exactly the movie will be about, but the Mouse House reportedly has "multiple platform aspirations" with this one. So it sounds like the company wants a TRON-like film that remains grounded in sci-fi conventions, but serves as more of an introduction to a fantastical world - and not just a self-contained story.
Lindelof's work schedule has been full to the brim since Lost ended last year - and his resume looks to become a whole lot more impressive in the near future. However, 1952 will be the first new project where Lindelof not only works alone, but will also be responsible for concocting his own creative sci-fi universe. So here's hoping he continues to excell, even without a specific template to follow.
The World's End
Pegg wants to get going soon on writing the finale to his and Wright's "Blood & Ice Cream" (a.k.a. "Three Flavors Cornetto") trilogy that began with Shaun of the Dead and continued on with Hot Fuzz. Their third teamup has long been rumored to be titled The World's End, which may be a tongue-in-cheek salute to apocalyptic thrillers - like Shaun was to zombie films and Hot Fuzz was to buddy-cop action movies.
Here's what Pegg had to offer AICN, on what he and Wright have in mind:
"... The next thing that we do will hopefully be… you know, in writing our new thing, Edgar and me have been very determined – that we’re going to start in earnest very, very soon – to not just do the same thing again, to do something very different. Not to the point of alienating people who want something, but just give people something new and something different. You can’t just stay where you are forever. You have to mutate to survive, and I think we’re going to make sure that we do that. I’d hate to become stale and predictable. People are already making films that are kind of like the sort of thing we might do. I want to stay a little bit ahead of the curve at least."
The short of it: Pegg and Wright probably have an idea in mind for their next writing collaboration, but they've yet to do any actual scripting. Expectations are much higher now, as both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are generally recognized as semi-cult classics. All the same, Pegg and Wright seem to bring out the best in one another, so their next film could easily be well worth the wait.
We'll keep you posted on the status of both 1952 and The World's End (or whatever they ultimately end up being titled) as more information is released.
