Warning: Spoilers for Robin #5!

When it comes to insults in DC Comics, Batman’s son and current RobinDamian Wayne, knows how to push some buttons, and now he’s outdone himself by roasting the entire Bat-Family! Suffice it to say, Nightwing, Tim Drake, Spoiler, and Red Hood should apply some ointment to their burns as soon as possible because Damian just scorched them to a crisp.

Shown during the events of Robin #5, by Joshua Williamson and Gleb Melnikov, this issue sees Robin’s continued attempts to return to a place called Lazarus Island where he’s partaking in a Mortal Kombat-esque tournament to the death. Not only wanting to prove himself as his own man but also wanting to get to the bottom of exactly what’s going on on the island, Damian is confronted by a few members of his extended Bat-Family who’ve heard of his comings and goings and simply want him to come back to Gotham safe and sound.

Unwilling to sideline his ambitions for anyone (let alone his vigilante co-workers), Damian tells them that if they can successfully catch him, he’ll come back to Gotham without a fight. Running across rooftops as they chase Damian down, insults begin to fly as Damian tries to kick his family off their game and escape before they can grab hold of him. First sassing Tim Drake — widely considered to be the smartest and most tech-savvy of all Robins — by saying, “If I only had a computer to throw at you,” Damian next sets his sights on Spoiler who attempts to talk him down. Telling him that “we’re better together,” Damian immediately calls her out by cheekily asking, “Is that why you and Tim are on a break?” eviscerating Spoiler with a comment that throws her own words back at her.

Damian Wayne roasts the Bat-Family

Next chased by Nightwing, Dick tells Damian that he can’t outrun him due to his polished “high-wire” skills stemming from his time as a circus performer, only for Damian to say, “Are you sure you weren’t raised by clowns… Ric?” twice over roasting Nightwing by insulting his acrobatic expertise and poking fun at the name he went by after suffering from amnesia. Leaving Dick in the dust, Damian finally confronts Red Hood, and immediately calls him out as being a “reject.” Saying that he isn’t all that “cool" for being the Robin who died because “who hasn’t died?” Damian ends his tirade by saying, “I’d love to help you catch up, but I left my crowbar in my other cape,” referencing the messed up way Jason was killed at the hands of the Joker years ago. Ouch.

Now while all of these comments might seem a little harsh on the surface — especially coming from the often stand-offish Damian — once he incapacitates Red Hood, Damian walks away only to mumble, “It had to be done, Jason…” making it clear that he’s only acting this way because he needs his family to leave him be as he strikes out on his own. Known to always be the first to give someone a hard time, this little coda to his roast session actually speaks volumes for a character that’s known for his rough edges but also proves that he doesn’t always act this way with insidious intent.

So while it’s clear that Damian doesn’t want nor need his family’s help at the moment, he can’t help himself from sassing them to high heaven when given the chance. Damian Wayne might have just set his Bat-Family aflame with his comments, yet in the end, they all know he isn’t doing it to hurt them, but simply to make sure they don’t get in the way of him pursuing his destiny instead.
