Ultimate Marvel's Cyclops learned that full control of his mutant powers could make him equivalent to a superhuman god. In the parallel Ultimate Marvel reality - created to reimagine and modernize Marvel characters - teenage Scott Summers gets a taste of ultimate power while using the performance-enhancing drug called Banshee. While the X-Men quickly learn the consequences of the highly addictive drug, Scott craves its power, which allows him to push past all physical and psychological limitations to become completely charged with solar energy, allowing him new and powerful abilities that could even battle his girlfriend Jean Grey, the host of her universe’s Phoenix Force.

In Ultimate X-Men, Scott Summers was Professor Xavier’s first student who watched his mentor’s dream of coexistence between humans and mutants manifest into the X-Men, on which he served alongside Jean. Despite her brief dalliance with Wolverine, Cyclops was eventually able to express his feelings and begin a relationship with Marvel Girl, their love complicated by Jean’s connection to the Phoenix Force. After being brutally defeated by the powerful Alpha Flight - who had come to reclaim wayward member Northstar - the team learned much of their enemies' power derived from the drug Banshee. The X-Men were divided between those who condemned any use of the drug and those who sought to use it to defeat Alpha Flight and rescue Northstar. When Colossus was expelled from the X-Men after his history with Banshee was revealed, he secretly formed his own team of Banshee-enhanced X-Men whose membership included Cyclops, secretly a mole for Xavier and Jean in hopes of revealing the supplier behind the drug.

Although he faked his introductory dose of Banshee, Cyclops chose to inject himself for real to help his new teammates from losing again during their fight with Alpha Flight. In Ultimate X-Men #95 by Aaron Coleite, Mark Brooks, and Brandon Peterson, Cyclops is ecstatic about the results of Banshee’s power boost, no longer requiring his signature glasses or visor to direct his power. Thanks to the solar energy pumping through his body, Scott displays superhuman strength, flight, and even the ability to converse and interact with Jean in her astral Phoenix form.

Ultimate X-Men Cyclops Phoenix

This younger version of the famous X-Men leader had long been portrayed as more insecure, doubtful, and frightened by the dangerous capabilities of his powers. Upon using Banshee, it's revealed that after a humiliating day at school, Scott’s optic blast powers suddenly manifested, killing his foster parents and destroying their home, leading him to see his abilities as a curse beyond his control. While his new team deal with the perceived death of Northstar and the intense Banshee withdrawals, Scott refuses to listen to others, unwilling to return to a lesser state of being. Banshee allows him total control and the freedom that comes with it, making his powers strong enough to contend with the Phoenix, which is considered one of the most powerful forces in his universe.

While the two X-Men teams attempt to reconcile with each other, Jean meets her boyfriend on the moon, his powers allowing him to travel and survive in space. After accusing Jean of being jealous of his power, Cyclops’ new abilities begin to wane mid-battle, causing Jean to ask if the control is worth dying for. Although Scott Summers eventually concedes to reason, the entire incident proved that once the solar energy behind his optics blasts was channeled throughout his body, Cyclops could become a godlike mutant, with Ultimate X-Men confirming that the secret potential of his powers was way beyond what fans suspected.
