The upcoming Cyborg solo film could contain origin story aspects, according to star Joe Morton. Victor Stone first appeared in last year's Justice League, alongside Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, The Flash, and Aquaman. Fans of the superhero (and Teen Titans, probably) were excited to see the character come to life on the big screen, and now attention is starting to turn to his standalone movie.
Cyborg has been slated for 2020, along with Green Lantern Corps. But having no talent attached and given all the shifts in production dates and scripts the DCU has seen recently, many began to wonder whether or not these far-flung 2020 films would actually come to fruition. Joe Morton, who played Cyborg's father Dr. Silas Stone in Justice League, signed on early to reprise his role in the solo outing, agreeing to a three-picture deal (Batman V Superman, Justice League, Cyborg). Morton confirms the film is still intended to join the DCEU.

According to Morton in an interview with ET, the planned Cyborg film will be an origin story. He said he believed the plot to be about the father and son characters and how Cyborg himself came to exist:
"From what I understand, there will be a Cyborg movie. It will be about him and I, and about the family that he came from, how he becomes the Cyborg, et cetera. But from whence he came, as well."
Morton went on to praise the film for being a positive representation of black superheroes, something he doesn't think there is enough of in spite of our heavily superhero-focused pop culture. He admitted he was "very excited" to be a part of the project and was very grateful for his time on the Justice League set. Morton expressed what an honor it was to see directors Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon in action, enjoying his DCEU experience.
For a time, comic book film fans began to tire of origin stories and showed a preference for broader tales with more established heroes. However, the overwhelming success of Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman proved the origin formula can still be viable when it's executed in an engaging way. It would make sense if Warner Bros. wanted to pivot back to an origin story for Cyborg in the wake of Justice League's less than stellar box office outing. This approach would give the filmmakers an opportunity to fully introduce Ray Fisher's character to audiences while hopefully satisfying his lifelong fans at the same time.
