Ray Fisher’s Cyborg Could Still Have A Solo Movie & DCEU Future

Despite a long period of uncertainty hovering over the prospect of a Cyborg solo movie or any future appearances by Victor Stone in the DCEU, both remain possible. Beginning with a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Ray Fisher made his full debut as Cyborg in Justice League. However, following the movie's critical and box office disappointment, the originally planned Cyborg solo movie seemed to quietly evaporate from the DCEU's future slate, with Cyborg's intended release date coming and going earlier this month.

That kind of radio silence is usually a sign that a movie is no longer being prioritized or has been outright cancelled. However, with the omnipresent demand for the Justice League Snyder Cut along with Zack Snyder's reveals of just how much more meat there was to Cyborg's role in the movie, much of the DCEU chatter post-Justice League has been unusual. Cyborg has never faded away in the manner that he would have been expected to, and all this has buoyed fans' continued interest in a Cyborg solo effort, while Fisher's own enthusiasm for the role has also kept the fire burning.

Of course, a lot still has to happen for a Cyborg movie to get underway, particularly with its original release date now in the rear-view. However, following a number of developments since late 2019, there is a clear path forward for Victor Stone in the DCEU. Funnily enough, it's not even that far off from the original plan for Cyborg.

Cyborg Talks Are Still Ongoing

During a recent Twitch livestream, Ray Fisher offered his thanks to fans tweeting support for his portrayal of Cyborg on social media during the originally planned release date of the Cyborg solo movie. While not giving any direct answer as to what the future holds for his take on Victor Stone, and even commenting "I could tell that I can't tell you that," Fisher also stated that "Nothing's off the table [...] Knock on wood." Fisher further commented on the territory he would hope to see Victor's movie explore, specifically with regard to the place that Cyborg's technological nature leaves him in a world whose knee-jerk reaction is to "militarize" technology.

While this doesn't offer any concrete details on when or if audiences will see Victor Stone in the DCEU again, indications are that the franchise hasn't left him behind. Of course, actors teasing projects with a fifty-fifty chance of coming to fruition isn't exactly new. Though Cyborg hasn't made a proper appearance anywhere in the DCEU since Justice League, certain events in the interim offer noteworthy signals of Cyborg's return - one in particular that cannot be ignored.

Crisis On Infinite Earths Proves Cyborg Is Still In The DCEU Canon

Both the Arrowverse and DCEU Flashes meet in Crisis On Infinite Earths

Ironically, one of the biggest indicators of Cyborg's future hasn't come on the big screen at all, but during the CW's crossover mini-series Crisis On Infinite Earths. While the crossover was replete with cameos, references, and callbacks to countless DC movies and television series, the most unexpected one by far was Grant Gustin's Barry Allen coming face-to-face with Ezra Miller as the DCEU's version of the Flash. Cyborg enters the picture here in Miller's final line in his cameo, with his Barry Allen saying, "I told Victor this was possible," before fading out from the scene.

This is of course a direct reference to Ray Fisher's Cyborg, and the fact that any effort at all was made to name-drop Victor Stone firmly establishes that Cyborg remains a part of the DCEU's canon. Furthermore, it also offers a clear signal of Victor making future appearances in the franchise. The only question at this point is exactly when and where that will happen.

Where Cyborg Could Appear Next

Much more so than the other heroes seen in Justice League, the Snyder Cut is an element of the Cyborg discussion. The Snyder Cut (which, unlike Jason Momoa, Fisher confirms he has not yet seen) being released would be a far bigger deal for Victor Stone than any of his fellow heroes due to how much his role was cut down, and if the Snyder Cut is ever released, fans can expect an even greater emphasis on Cyborg.

However, The Flash movie offers a far more direct hope for Victor Stone's DCEU future due to a combination of factors. Aside from the fact that Cyborg was intended to appear in The Flash from its inception, the movie itself is also set to be an adaptation of Flashpoint, a comic book story in which Cyborg is a significant player. On top of that, Cyborg has already been set up to appear in the Andy Muschietti-directed Flash movie through Barry's mention of him on Crisis On Infinite Earths, which points to the two maintaining a close friendship. Though Ezra Miller is currently the subject of an assault controversy, whatever effect it may have on The Flash cannot be fully determined without knowing the whole story (especially with Miller not currently being under police investigation). In any case, a supporting or co-starring role in The Flash would be the most logical next step for Victor after Barry's Crisis cameo and would be the most streamlined path for a Cyborg movie to finally get rolling.

Analyzing the situation under normal circumstances, Cyborg's solo movie and any other future appearances for the character in the DCEU would have likely had the book closed on them long ago. However, if the demand for the Justice League Snyder Cut and the unexpected appearance of a third Flash on Crisis on Infinite Earths are proof of anything, it's that Cyborg's circumstances are the furthest thing from normal. Like Barry Allen, Victor Stone's big screen future has been in a state of suspended animation for far longer than most superheroes even as he's simultaneously been featured in other DC adaptations. Nevertheless, the last few years' worth of action with the DCEU, the Snyder Cut, and Crisis On Infinite Earths have kept the possibility of more Cyborg alive far longer than would have ever seemed possible. That alone shows that despite the development hell that Victor Stone's role in the DCEU has gone through, writing off Cyborg remains premature.
