A modder is developing a VR mod for Cyberpunk 2077 that will soon allow fans to explore Night City in virtual reality, with its release expected in just a few weeks' time. The VR modder and YouTuber has completed similar huge projects in the past, including a Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mod with first-person perspective and full head-tracking. The creator is just about finished with their most recent project, which means Cyberpunk 2077 is next on the block.

Though Cyberpunk 2077’s 2020 launch was extremely controversial, the open-world RPG saw a wave of positive reviews on Steam at the end of November this year – likely thanks to the Steam Autumn Sale. The game received more than 18,000 positive reviews and garnered a first-place spot on Steam’s Global Top Sellers list, with new players seemingly enjoying the title. A recent batch of DLC content and the highly-anticipated new-gen upgrade could also be factors in the game’s new positive light. CD Projekt Red claimed Cyberpunk 2077’s PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrade will likely drop in Q1 2022 after a series of delays pushed it away from a 2021 release. Thankfully modders are working to develop content updates of their own.

As reported by PC Gamer, known modder Luke Ross is developing a VR mod for Cyberpunk 2077 that will allow players to explore Night City in virtual reality. Ross decided to greenlight the project after a poll on his Patreon page in which his backers voted for the sci-fi RPG as his next VR endeavor. While the release date isn’t set in stone, Luke Ross told PC Gamer that fans can expect the mod to release sometime in January, barring any developmental problems. He explained that while Cyberpunk 2077’s REDengine 4 won’t necessarily assist in converting the open world to VR, the game’s first-person perspective is already a step ahead compared to Ross’ other VR projects such as the Mafia Trilogy.

Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod

Ross has already converted many massive open worlds to VR in the past, potentially making a Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod feel like another day at the office for the creator. Ross has developed an engine that converts games to virtual reality, and while he still has game-specific details to iron out each time, creating VR mods has become a fairly streamlined process. Ross previously explained that his modding framework has matured over time, leading the process to take around a month per game, on average. Given Cyberpunk 2077’s laundry list of bugs and glitches, however, there may be unforeseen issues that make its VR conversion difficult, which could make Ross' January release window somewhat optimistic.

Cyberpunk 2077 was arguably one of the most highly-anticipated game releases of the last console generation, and its rocky launch and myriad of bugs and technical issues left many disappointed. Since release, developer CD Projekt Red has begun improving the experience through patches and enhancements, with the aim of making the game more aligned with fan expectations. Despite the game's flaws in performance, Night City has been designed as an immersive sci-fi playground with plenty of positive features, and being able to explore Cyberpunk 2077's Night City in VR is likely to be a dream come true for many.
