CD Projekt Red, the company most well known for the acclaimed Witcher series, has spent years developing their sci-fi property Cyberpunk 2077, and now, fans can get a better look at the upcoming game thanks to a new E3 trailer. As an adaptation of the '90s tabletop RPG game Cyberpunk 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 is a departure from the series of Polish novels around which The Witcher was based, offering players a new IP and a customizable character to take into a dangerous sci-fi world.
While information on the road to release has been limited, the emphasis has been on quality, and CD Projekt Red has quite the legacy to live up to. Their Witcher franchise and, specifically, The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, have been dignified as some of the finest modern roleplaying games, offering a mature storytelling style with a focus on player agency, with each decision affecting aspects of the plot in meaningful ways. Geralt of Rivia has grown into recognition and even become synonymous with the brand, and Cyberpunk 2077's dystopic aesthetic is a far cry from the dragons and dwarves of CD Projekt Red's previous series.
This pedigree is possibly one reason why the company has been so tight-lipped about their upcoming game, and it's never been shown in any capacity at previous E3 events. Now, several years from its original teaser trailer, gamers can finally get the chance to see what CD Projekt Red has been up all this time, with a real Cyberpunk 2077 trailer made available to the public.
