According to a new update, CD Projekt Red is making progress towards getting Cyberpunk 2077 returned to the PlayStation Store. Cyberpunk 2077 has become notorious for its catastrophic launch in December 2020. After years of hype, the game’s eventual release was one that was riddled with bugs and endless disappointment.
And yet, despite its undeniably rocky start, there have been several updates and patches for Cyberpunk 2077 that have steadily improved the overall quality of the game. This is not to say that it is up to the standard that fans had expected pre-launch, however. Sadly, there is some way to go before that can be truly realized. However, in an effort to turn things around for the developers, a new director has been brought in to oversee the project from now on. But, even with this change in management, there are still multiple hurdles to go before CDPR can truly take its feet off the Cyberpunk 2077 pedal.
This is a sentiment that is clearly also felt by Sony. Following on from CD Projekt Red’s recent Q1 earnings call, a tweet from Stephen Totilo has revealed that “there are metrics that Sony needs (CDPR) to hit,” before bringing Cyberpunk 2077 back to the PlayStation Store. However, the tweet also shared that CDPR is “in the middle” of this process already. There was no specific date mentioned, even tentatively, at this point as to when this process is expected to reach completion. Rather, it was simply (and understandably) stated that “the decision will be announced when it’s ready to be announced.”
There were no other details disclosing what exactly the conditions being imposed on CD Projekt Red by Sony are. However, getting Cyberpunk 2077 back onto the PlayStation Store is surely one of CDPR’s biggest priorities right now. The game’s high-profile removal from the store in December caused a huge loss in faith from consumers and made investors justifiably anxious. In the same earnings report, it was revealed that CD Projekt Red’s profits had fallen by more than 60%, citing Cyberpunk 2077 as the main cause of this depletion. CDPR will no doubt be hoping that Cyberpunk 2077’s eventual return to the PlayStation Store will bolster not only confidence, but also its sales in the future.
Sadly, the Cyberpunk 2077 saga is far from over. However, it is encouraging to hear that more steps are being taken to get the game up to the standard that many had originally hoped for. While Cyberpunk 2077’s launch was certainly a mess, it should not be forgotten that there were, and still are, teams of hard-working employees that really want to make a great game. There is still a chance for CD Projekt Red to turn things around in the future, and getting Cyberpunk 2077 back onto the PlayStation Store will be a real boost for the company when that time ultimately comes.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PS4 (retail), Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia, and it will launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2021.
