Cyberpunk 2077's Night City is located in the heart of California, directly on the west coast of the United States. At this point in the world of Cyberpunk 2077's story, California has split into two different halves, South California and North California. The location of Night City in real life is in the heart of California, directly on the coast. The self-goverened free state of Night City in Cyberpunk 2077, however, would say that it is at the very bottom of North California.

In the world of Cyberpunk, Night City is run by megacorporations like the Araska Corporation, and is not under the jurisdiction of the United States government. It's a city wracked with crime and danger where the rich flourish and the disenfranchised suffer more than ever. There are over six million residents in Cyberpunk 2077's Night City, and this booming population has led to massive amounts of crime and gang violence. Night City has served as the main setting of the entire Cyberpunk series, including each edition of the pen-and-paper RPG.

Where Night City Is On Cyberpunk's World Map

The location of Night City on an in-game map in Cyberpunk 2077

Where Night City is located in real life is important because it explains how the world of Cyberpunk became as fractured as it is. Free states in Cyberpunk 2077's lore are still part of the union, but can disregard federal laws and make their own. On top of this, Cyberpunk's Night City is its own city-state, not controlled by North California.

In real life Night City is located right on top of what is present-day San Diego, California. The other free states in Cyberpunk's world are Texas, Utah, Nevada, and Alaska, some of them with cities large enough to rival Night City's population.

How Night City's Location Was Chosen

Night City was initially established as Coronado City in the 1990s by a powerful businessman named Richard Night. The original name stemmed from the city's location on in the Del Coronado Bay. Night City's map intersecting with both industry activity and the coast made it a prime location for trade and connections, which is why Richard Night chose that area.

In 2069 a war broke out between the Free States and the New United States, with Night City narrowly managing to avoid conflict and destruction. The war ended with The Treaty of Unification, which rebranded Night City as an independent city-state, and the population of Night City has continued to rise ever since.

All of this happens before Cyberpunk 2077's story and missions take place, and now Night City is a massive metropolis where megacorporations rule through money and power.
