Cyberpunk 2077 may be renowned for its bugs, but some players are taking it to the next level, with a mod that causes NPCs to spontaneously explode. The result may not be what the modder in question intended, but it's still interesting to see, nonetheless.

Enough has been said about Cyberpunk 2077's spectacularly bad release to fill several books, and several more could be written about the efforts of developer CD Projekt Red to alleviate both the game's bugs and its own bad press. The latter is proving to be a spectacularly tall order, considering that the situation has expanded into lawsuits, relentless press coverage, and controversy over alleged bad business practices that led to the game's poor release state. Notably, though, the game has fared somewhat better on PC than it has on consoles. Now that the initial fuss has died down somewhat, PC players are finding other ways to entertain themselves with Cyberpunk 2077, such as modding it until it breaks worse than usual.

Twitter user Wilburgur_ is one such modder. Though they've also posted a few videos on their feed poking fun at Cyberpunk 2077's gameplay, they've also some of the mods they've created so far. One such mod that's caught the public's attention is a work in progress, and it currently results in NPCs spontaneously exploding. It's not clear what Wilburgur's motives or intentions are for the mod, but the exploding NPCs seem to be more of an unfortunate (but oddly entertaining) side effect. As seen below, the NPCs aren't just exploding into nothingness - it's visceral, gory, and occasionally leaves a fully mutilated corpse in its wake, so it's obviously not for the faint of heart.

Modding games comes with its own set of risks for amateurs, but when it's done right, it can make up for a lot of a game's shortcomings that have yet to be patched or were ultimately ignored. Of course, this is strictly limited to the PC version of the game. Unfortunately, it'll take a lot more than a few mods to bring the console versions up to scratch, and that work is best left in the hands of developers.

Cyberpunk 2077 has a long way to go before it can be considered an appropriately functioning game, but modders have at least given a helping hand. While a fair few modders have been using their powers for good, which is a pretty selfless endeavor considering they're not paid for their work, a few, like Wilburgur, are using their powers for entertainment, which is an equally worthwhile effort. After all, pointing out Cyberpunk 2077's many, many flaws is starting to wear a bit thin, and people need something new to distract themselves with, even if that means making innocent NPCs hilariously and suddenly burst for no apparent reason.
