The newest game from CD Projekt Red, the studio behind The Witcher 3, is the futuristic sci-fi odyssey Cyberpunk 2077. Although the games have very different settings and worlds, as well as a few other notable differences, they still have a lot in common. Because of this, fans of The Witcher 3 may be curious whether or not they'll actually enjoy Cyberpunk 2077.

Depending on the player, that answer is most likely yes. Both games are immersive open world RPGs with similar quest designs and map layouts. For anyone who loved The Witcher 3 because of its character choices and exploration, Cyberpunk 2077 should be a great follow-up with even more gameplay and story customization options. However, those aren't the only reasons Witcher 3 fans should enjoy Cyberpunk 2077.

A lot of the gameplay mechanics in Cyberpunk 2077 resemble those found in The Witcher 3. Even Braindances, which allows players to plug into a mainframe computer to access memories, bears a striking resemblance to the dream magic of oneiromancy found in The Witcher series. And because both Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 are RPGs made by CD Projekt Red, there are a lot of genre similarities already. However, Cyberpunk 2077 isn't just a sci-fi reskin of The Witcher 3; the two games still have their notable differences.

How Cyberpunk 2077 Is Different From The Witcher 3

Obviously, the settings of both games are very different. For players who loved The Witcher 3 for its medieval and high fantasy setting, Cyberpunk 2077 might not scratch the same itch. In a lot of ways, it's like comparing Bethesda's Elder Scrolls games to their Fallout series: a lot of similarities exist, but one is futuristic science fiction, and the other is (mostly) pure high fantasy. Because of this, the world, tone, characters, and combat will all feel a lot different between the two games.

One of the more notable differences is that Cyberpunk 2077's protagonist, V, can be customized as more of a blank slate character, whereas The Witcher 3's Geralt was a pre-established character with a set personality. The player choices and customizations in Cyberpunk 2077 are far greater, and that includes allowing players to design their own protagonist and make even more of their own choices. The first-person perspective in Cyberpunk 2077 is also very different from the third-person view in The Witcher 3, which could turn off some Witcher fans.

Overall, though, the similarities between the two games from CD Projekt Red outweigh the differences. Because of this, most fans of The Witcher 3 should enjoy Cyberpunk 2077.
