Netflix is making a Cyberpunk 2077 anime series, titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and here's everything we know about its story and release date. CD Projekt Red has been working on their video game Cyberpunk 2077 - an adaptation of the Cyberpunk franchise - since 2012, but they took a short break to focus on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt before jumping back into the futuristic title. It's finally releasing in November 2020, but it won't be the end of the series' journey.
Cyberpunk 2077 will act as a launchpad for a new franchise for the Polish studio, similar to what happened with The Witcher trilogy, which itself was based on a series of novels. Dark Horse will be releasing Cyberpunk 2077: Trauma Team, a comic book series set in the game's world, in September 2020. At some point after that, CMON Limited will release the card game Cyberpunk 2077 - Afterlife: The Card Game. Furthermore, the latest edition of the original Cyberpunk game, Cyberpunk Red, will come out before the game's launch and not only act as a sequel to Cyberpunk 2020 but a prequel to Cyberpunk 2077 as well, set in 2045.
In addition to all of the aforementioned releases, CD Projekt Red also has Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an anime series they will be developing with Japan's Studio Trigger and Netflix. Only recently announced, there's little known about what exactly Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will entail, but here's everything that's been revealed so far.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Anime Release Date Info
In the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners announcement video and press release, CD Projekt Red, Studio Trigger, and Netflix confirmed that the anime series will release in 2022. A specific date wasn't provided nor was a time frame, but it's good that fans at least know when to generally expect the TV show. Studio Trigger is quick at what they do, so considering that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was announced in mid-2020, it stands to reason the series will release earlier in 2022 instead of later.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Story Details
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will be a 10-episode limited series set in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077. However, it won't be an adaptation or recreation of the video game. Instead, it will be a standalone story that takes place in the backdrop of the game's Night City but with an entirely different focus. Not only will the aesthetic and setting be generally new, but there will be new characters as well. It's envisioned as an entrance to both Cyberpunk 2077 and the cyberpunk genre overall.
According to the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners synopsis, the Netflix anime will tell the story of a "street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner - a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk." Generally following the same concept as the game, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will nail down the nuance of Night City.
